I’m still adjusting to the whole new year thing. Now that I am finally adjusting to it (A.K.A finally home for the holidays) its time to settle in. I can’t think of a better way to start, than with today’s full court press:
- Pat Burrell found a home a lot quicker than many people thought. Burrell will be the everyday DH in Tampa. How will this effect his numbers? I honestly think it will bring a mass decrease in his power and a slight increase in strikeouts. Burrell was rumored to be a suitor for the opening DH spot with Oakland. Though the ball does fly pretty well in St. Petersburg, Burrells value decreases, because 1.) he is a UTIL now, meaning you can’t move him over. 2.) he doesn’t put up good enough power numbers to take him at the slot he will be valued at.
- James Harrison was named the defensive player of the year in the NFL. Such a good story. The former back-up to James Farrior and Joey Porter was cut numerous times, but finally got his shot. He beat out Dallas defender DeMarcus Ware pretty handily. It will be interesting where Harrison will fall in drafts next year. You always have the top names going before the names people do not recognize. He could be a great pick if you play in defense leagues, becuase as he said it, he is a fragment of the system in Pittsburgh.
- Adam Foote and Ian Laperriere will not head to Nashville for Tuesday’s game against the Predators. The Avalanche are already without Joe Sakic. They have not played well as of late, and have only scored once in the last three games. The Avs have gave up 12 goals in that same period. I would reccomend sitting all Colorado players. Especially defenseman.
- Are you looking for a Goalie? There are a couple guys that would be worth picking up this week, including Jonas Hiller, who recorded 29 saves and his third shutout. One thing that hurts is that he is behind Giguere. At the deadline though, he could become availabe to a team in contention. How about Craig Anderson? He has started two straight games for Florida. Being a Panther, he faces a lot of shots. he has faced 45 in two straight games.
- Closer Watch: Two relievers signed in recent days that could become closers for their new teams. Scott Proctor signed with the Marlins and Derrick Turnbow with the Rangers. Both are on the outside looking in, but they could fill the void.
- Keep an eye out on the NBA Developmental league. They will hold a showcase for four days in front of NBA scouts and team representatives. There are some good names looking for a spot on rosters, including former Michigan Standout Courtney Sims, former Laker Guard Smush Parker and 08 draftee Patrick Ewing Jr.
