The Value Meter: Ian Kinsler vs. Chase Utley

by Featured

Draft Time is right around the corner. We all know that depth at some positions, such as first base and outfield, leave many wondering what positions are the weakest and should be drafted right away. One of this positions I would argue is second base. It will be key in 2009 to get one of the top 5 second baseman. So who are the two best at the position? I would argue it is Chase Utley and Ian Kinsler. But who is worth more? That is the question that could haunt you on draft day. Let’s take a closer look.

Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies-

2008: 159 G 607 AB 177 H 41 2B 33 HR 104 RBI .292 AVG

2007: 132 G 530 AB 176 H 48 2B 33 HR 103 RBI .332 AVG

2006: 160 G 658 AB 203 H 40 2B 32 HR 102 RBI .309 AVG

As detailed, Utley has shown through his history that he will be consistent in driving in runs, and I think it will be safe to say that he will for the most part stay healthy (though he has had small injuries in the past.) Utley took a total of 64 walks and struck out 104 times. One thing to note though is that he led the league in the hit by pitch statistic. Stolen base wise, Utley won’t be that much of a factor (only 14 in 2008) but .380 OBP shows that his high strikeout rate will really not be a factor.

Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers-

2008: 121 G 518 AB 165 H 41 2B 18 HR 71 RBI .319 AVG

2007: 130 G 483 AB 127 H 22 2B 20 HR 61 RBI .263 AVG

2006: 120 G 423 AB 121 H 27 2B 14 HR 55 RBI .286 AVG

What makes Kinsler so valuable is his versatility. He has had 20+ steals in two straight years. He doesn’t strike out much, which also helps increase his OBP even though he doesn’t walk all that much. A lot of fantasy gurus like Kinsler so much because of the talent the he has shown in such little amount of time. If he does play 160 games like Utley in 2008, his numbers could be very comparable. If he can stay healthy, then he could be a steal in the second or third round.

The verdict:

Though both have great protection (Ryan Howard and Josh Hamilton), One factor has to be who sets the table for both hitters. Jimmy Rollins makes Chase Ultey that much more valuable because with a career .333 OBP and at least 40 steals the last two years. His run production is higher than Kinslers and Utley’s stolen bases will be a bit lower, but he overcomes that with the runs batted in he produces. For me, It is a no brainer. If you draft on feeling, then go with Kinsler. If your way of doing things revolves around history, then Utley is your guy. Utley should be healthy by Opening Day.
