Living in the same state where a professional football team went winless can be embarrassing. Fans from across the nation point and laugh as Jon Kitna was sent to the IR after choking. They laugh because management thought it would be a smart idea to sign a washed up linebacker Daunte Culpepper to a monstrous contract. After trying to run away from the Detroit woes, Orlovsky has figured out that he has had enough. He is upset that this “Daunte” character was the selected starter in 2009, Orlovsky made a decision to leave the darkness of Honolulu blue, because he thinks he can prove himself as a starter in this league. For some strange reason, I am starting to think this one time UConn product has what it takes to at least compete for a starters job in this league.
Was Orlovksy drafted to be a starter in this league? No. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2005 draft, Orlovsky threw for 1616 yards of total offense in ten games (seven started). In a tough situation, after sitting behind Jon Kitna for two seasons, Orlovsky became the quarterback on the Lions roster, who maintained possesion the best, by not turning over the football. His eight touchdowns (seven of which were to Calvin Johnson) and eight interceptions don’t stand out, but his efficiency and 72.6 QB rating in such limited playing time does.
Only the Texans have been rumored to be interested in Ovlovsky. It seems that the Chiefs, Jets, and Raiders could be interested in Orlovsky’s services.
The Lions are most likely going to start Daunte Culpepper, who has gone 5-17 over the last four seasons, is the likely starter at this point.
Fantasy wise, at best Orlovsky starts 2009 as a 3rd string quarterback. Even if he does by some miracle win out a starting position, his experience and dependance on a lead reciever will be a weak point in 2009.
