With the first overall pick in the draft, Fantasy CPR selects…. Adrian Peterson.Peterson is a rushing phenom.
No Duh.
Having the very first pick in the latest mock draft set the table to play out many of the scenarios that I had hoped for. Firstly, after being the second pick in the draft, and having to decide between the number of capable number two picks, It was nice to know who to take with the first round pick. After that, I had no secure plans on what players I wanted to take. There were so many draft strategies to play with. Taking wide receivers early, drafting four straight running backs, targeting the high fantasy point quarterback, or just taking the best available.
After round two, It became clear to me that in this particular draft, and in this particular position, drafting to maximize every single position was the key. So in the second round, with Larry Fitzgerald off the board, I drafted Tom Brady. Brady is coming off injury, but I feel that he is going to be back to top notch form when the season starts. My plan being that with such a high draft ranking, I will target a backup higher than what I normally would. The targets were Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, and Donovan McNabb. When those players fell just picks in front of me, I went with Trent Edwards. He has a new target in town, and T.O. opens up receptions for Lee Evans. J.P. Lossman isn’t there for him to worry about his starting position. Edwards fell to me in the 12th round. Not bad for a top 20 signal caller.
Running back wise, beyond Peterson, I felt that combining Peterson with a pounder like Lendale White would be a solid option for maximizing my starting running backs after just missing out on Ryan Grant, Kevin Smith and Joseph Addai. Later in the draft I took Fred Jackson of Buffalo, understanding that his value might only lie in the first three weeks. By then, I hope to find talent through the waiver wire. I rounded out my running back corps with my second favorite sleeper at running back. Ahmad Bradshaw is replacing Derrick Ward in New York’s offense, and besides Ward, I think Bradshaw is the best sleeper pick. Even with Jacobs there, injuries and his flat out speed could get him 900 yards on the season.
Wide Receiver is the strongest position on this mock draft squad in my opinion. In the third round, I selected Steve Smith with the first pick. Smith is one of the most underrated receivers this year. I think he is more valuable than the two running backs that went before him. Clinton Portis is on the last tread and Brandon Jacobs is an oft-injured running back I don’t want my stock in. With the Johnson boys off the board, Smith was the best receiver available in the third round. At the end of the third round, I selected Roy Williams. He is the go to guy in Dallas and a solid number tw0 receiver. Chad Ochocinco and Devin Hester are my sleeper picks, While Mike Crabtree, Devin Hester and Mike Crabtree add depth and trade value.
In my reach of the draft, I took Dallas Clark with the first pick of the fifth round. At this point, I felt solidified at every position but defense and kicker. Therefore I did not draft a backup tight end. When the bye week comes, I will make the roster moves needed. My defensive situation is pretty strong. I drafted two of the top ten defenses in the league in Minnesota and Pittsburgh.
Mock Draft 3.0 will be on it’s way on next week’s Fantasy CPR Live.
