Common fantasy football logic says you should handcuff your running backs. It protects your investment and prevents you from losing a starter in case of injury. Well, I’ve largely been avoiding that strategy this season. Here’s why:
With the increase of running back platoons, handcuffs are being drafted higher than ever. According to fantasyfootballcalculator.com, LenDale White and Felix Jones are being drafted in the sixth round. Jonathan Stewart is going in the seventh. Ahmad Bradshaw and LeSean McCoy are being drafted in the eighth. While a lot of these guys have value on their own, those picks are too high to merely be insurance. So draft wisely. Don’t insure your running backs and leave a hole at other positions. In my opinion, it’s best to avoid handcuffing your players until the double digit rounds. The early round picks are just to valuable to waste them on an insurance policy.
Is it a gamble to avoid handcuffing some running backs? It sure is. But it’s a risk I’m willing to take.
