Since this is a summary of the seventh Sunday of the season we’ll keep it all S’s as we run down the summary stat, standout stud, surprise star, shockingly subpar, and scratches & scrapes from Week 7 in the NFL.
Atlanta 23, Detroit 16
Summary Stat: 1-12 The Lions on 3rd down while the Falcons went 7-17. Atlanta’s run-first offense seems to be its new identity and quite a successful one at that while Detroit’s offense sputtered without Jahvid Best.
Standout Stud: Calvin Johnson had 5 for 115 and a TD as he continues to state his claim as #1 overall WR in the league. That could all change if he loses Stafford though.
Surprise Star: Harry Douglas 4 catches for 62 yards. His roll will probably reduce with Julio Jones return but until then he’s been a solid bye-week fill in and came up with a huge 3rd down catch today.
Shockingly Subpar: Nate Burleson-If anyone was still left on the “black Wes Welker” bandwagon feel free to exit as Burleson caught just 1 pass for 1 yard.
Scratches & Scrapes: More MRIs for Matthew Stafford could spell disaster for Detroit. The “if he stays healthy” tag might not be so funny if he doesn’t.
Carolina 33, Washington 20
Summary Stat: 175 yards on the ground for the Panthers as they dominated the ‘Skins D.
Standout Stud: Cam Newton-While it wasn’t his best statistical game his 256 yards passing with a TD and 59 yards on the ground with a TD were made even better by the 0 turnovers. He did what he needed to get the win without trying to do too much and turning the ball over.
Surprise Star: Brandon LaFell emerged as the 2nd WR in the Panthers offense with 2 catches for 39 yards and Newton’s 1 TD. He’s not necessarily a “go get him” pickup but somebody to keep in mind if you need bye-week help.
Shockingly Subpar: Greg Olsen caught only 1 pass for 4 yards this week and was outplayed by Jeremy Shockey. If possible avoid this TE situation since it’s tough to tell who will get the looks from week to week.
Scratches & Scrapes: Santana Moss broke his hand and is out for at least next week. Tim Hightower returned from injury only to injure his left knee although the severity is still unknown.
Cleveland 6, Seattle 3
Summary Stat: 137-yards of total offense for Seattle, and they came within one block in the back penalty of winning. The Browns dominated the clock but only got 2 long FGs. Fortunately it was 3 points more than the woeful Seahawks could muster.
Standout Stud: Montario Hardesty had 95 yards rushing and since there were no TDs that’s about the best you could get from this one.
Surprise Star: Chris Ogbonnaya 5 catches for 43 yards led the game in receiving due to all the Browns injuries.
Shockingly Subpar: the game overall was a yawner but the Seattle receivers were especially bad. Sidney Rice has 2 for 38 and Doug Baldwin didn’t even have a catch although he was targeted 3 times… betcha didn’t ever think that T. Jackson’s return would help your offense, but that appears to be the case for Seattle.
Scratches & Scrapes: Ben Watson and Muhamed Massaquoi both left with head injuries and could miss next week depending on how the week plays out. Marshawn Lynch injured his back in pregame warmups and was inactive for this one so make sure to keep an eye on him this week too.
Denver 18, Miami 15
Summary Stat: 9-13 121 yards 2 TDs and a 2-pt conversion in the last 5 minutes for Tim Tebow as he led a stunning comeback to add to his legend. Many will forget how horrible he was for the first 3 ½ quarters, but a win is a win even over the lowly Dolphins.
Standout Stud: Not much here but I guess it would be Brandon Marshall’s 6 catches for 61. Overall this was a statistical letdown for all the players involved.
Surprise Star: Demaryius Thomas’s 3 catches for 27 yards and a TD weren’t spectacular but his 10 targets signal a big uptick in numbers if Tebow can get some momentum going forward.
Shockingly Subpar: Eric Decker-with only 2 catches on 3 targets for 21 yards his usefulness in fantasy may have left with Orton and Lloyd
Scratches & Scrapes: Willis McGahee left the game with a broken hand. He says he’ll be fine, but both Moreno and McGahee owners will be anxious to see how much, if any, time he’ll miss.
New York Jets 27, San Diego 21
Summary Stat: 0-points allowed by the Jets in the second half while scoring 17 to come from behind against a shaky Philip Rivers.
Standout Stud: Antonio Gates-He’s back with 5 catches, 54 yards, and a TD his owners will be glad to know he had no setbacks and looks good to go.
Surprise Star: Plaxico Burress had only 4 catches for 25 yards but he’s the story in this one since 3 of those 4 catches were in the end zone. Not sure you can expect high level production from him going forward but he was a great option if you started him this week.
Shockingly Subpar: Vincent Jackson had only 1 catch for 15 yards. The Revis factor was definitely part of the problem for V-Jax but he was targeted a whopping 8 times so he should be ok going forward as Rivers is much better than he played today.
Scratches & Scrapes: None with any fantasy impact.
Chicago 24, Tampa Bay 18
Summary Stat: 4-picks for Josh Freeman. The Bears offense looked decent but Freeman gave away this one.
Standout Stud: Matt Forte- 145 yards and a touchdown on the ground plus another 38 yards on 2 passes kept his stellar season rolling right along.
Surprise Star: Dezmon Briscoe hauled in 6 of his 10 targets for 73 yards and a TD as the Bucs had to go all passing after Graham’s exit. This kind of production probably won’t be the norm, but Briscoe’s a guy to have on your radar.
Shockingly Subpar: Josh Freeman was abandoned in the backfield for most of this game as the Bucs only had 11 rushing plays. His 264 yards and 2 TD’s weren’t bad, but 4 picks are just not going to get it done. Hopefully Blount’s return can bring back the balance this offense needs.
Scratches & Scrapes: Earnest Graham filling in for the injured LeGarrette Blount left with an ankle injury that looked bad and may keep him out for a number of weeks.
Houston 41, Tennessee 7
Summary Stat: 518-148 total yards in favor of the Texans as they dominated the Titans all day long.
Standout Stud: Arian Foster- 115 yards rushing, 119 yards receiving, 3 total TDs. If you had him you won; if you played him you lost. For all those who drafted him #1 overall I hope it wasn’t too late.
Surprise Star: Owen Daniels struggled last week so his 4 catches for 71 yards is a nice bounceback performance.
Shockingly Subpar: Chris Johnson-10 rushes for 18 yards, but he might have saved something since he did have 6 catches for 27 yards. He needed the breakout, but it was Foster that had it.
Scratches & Scrapes: Danieal Manning is a big loss for the Texans defense but is the only new injury for the injury-riddles Texans in this one.
Pittsburgh 32, Arizona 20
Summary Stat: 95 yards-longest play in Steelers history from Big Ben to Mike Wallace. More than any other this play set the tone for a big day for the Steelers.
Standout Stud: Ben Roethlisberger-361 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs. He and Mike Wallace are scary good in the passing game and next week’s showdown with Brady and the Pats should be a good one.
Surprise Star: Antonio Brown had 7 catches for 102 on 9 targets which would seem to plant him firmly as the #2 receiver option passing up Hines Ward regardless of Ward’s injury.
Shockingly Subpar: Rashard Mendenhall-13 carries for only 32 yards
Scratches & Scrapes: Beanie Wells and Hines Ward both left early with leg injuries of unknown severity
KC 28, Oakland 0
Summary Stat: 6-turnovers for Oakland. 3 INT’s for each Raider QB.
Standout Stud: Darrius Heyward-Bay had another solid game despite bad QB play and his 11 targets indicate his 5 catches for 89 yards will only go up as Palmer gets more reps in this Raiders offense.
Surprise Star: KC’s defense got 6 picks 2 pick six’s and a shutout on the road. If you grabbed them as a bye-week filler it was definitely the right call.
Shockingly Subpar: Matt Cassel had a good matchup against the Raiders secondary but didn’t need to throw all that much throwing for 161 yards, 0 TDs, and 2 INTs
Scratches & Scrapes: Darren McFadden left in the first quarter with an injured right foot.
Green Bay 33, Minnesota 27
Summary Stat: Rodgers 3 TDs, 0 INTS vs Ponder 2 TDs, 2 INTs- The Vikings looked much better and gave the Pack a close game. Ponder might actually make them mediocre for the rest of this year.
Standout Stud: Greg Jennings-7 catches for 147 and a TD as he reasserted his #1 WR status despite the spreading of the wealth of Rodgers yards. AP also had a very nice day (175 yds and a TD)
Surprise Star: Michael Jenkins-he far surpassed Percy Harvin’s totals with 3 catches for 111 and a TD.
Shockingly Subpar: Percy Harvin caught just 2 passes for 15 yards and was targeted only 3 times. He missed the second half as detailed below but can’t be counted on in any format until he develops something of a connection with Ponder.
Scratches & Scrapes: Harvin’s recurring rib injury is worrisome making him an extremely risky play next week v Carolina. Peterson missed a few plays with a foot injury but returned and finished the game.
Dallas 34, St. Louis 7
Summary Stat: 294 rushing yards for the Cowboys and 265 yards of total offense for the Rams. A J Feeley is not the answer. Get well, Sam!
Standout Stud: Dez Bryant-5 catches for 90 yards and a TD. His team high 8 targets bode well for his breakout to continue.
Surprise Star: DeMarco Murray-I told you last week that he was the guy to grab in the platoon and he sure showed it today as he rolled for 253 yards and a TD. His roll going forward remains to be seen but with fragile Felix ahead of him on the depth chart he should be owned in all leagues and started in most.
Shockingly Subpar: Tashard Choice-if you grabbed the wrong half of the split at RB you made the wrong choice. Tashard only got 8 yards on 2 carries and lost a fumble.
Scratches & Scrapes: Murray left for a few plays but appears to be fine and ready for another nice game against Philly next week.
New Orleans 62, Indianapolis 7
Summary Stat: 21 points for the Saints in the first quarter pretty much iced this one as New Orleans destroyed the hapless Colts.
Standout Stud: Drew Brees-31-35 for 325 yards and 5 TDs. The Colts secondary is weak but Brees looked unbeatable as he led his team up and down the field with ease.
Surprise Star: Delone Carter-showed a little juice in his legs as he ran for 89 yards and a touch. If he gets the majority of work (over Brown and Addai) he might be a bye-week flex option, but it’s hard to know if the Colts will be any good week-to-week for fantasy players.
Shockingly Subpar: Dallas Clark-In the many disappointments in the Colts offense Clark has no catches, targets, or yards and has completely disappeared off the fantasy radar as far as TE’s go.
Scratches and Scrapes: None of fantasy impact.
