Last night belonged to the Big 10 as they took their 3rd ACC-Big Ten victory in a row. The marquee victory though belonged to ACC beasts North Carolina as they held off a resilient Wisconsin team 60-57. The Big 10 got its wins to put the challenge out of reach from Indiana, Penn State, and Minnesota. Michigan State won the early showcase game over Florida State behind the big three of Draymond Green (16 points, 8 rebounds), Brandon Wood (16 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists) and Keith Appling (career high 24 points, 7 rebounds).
Throughout the week you’ll be hearing a lot about Jimmy V and the foundation that bears his name. In a time where they ugliness of sports come to the forefront so quickly thanks to scandals at Penn State, Syracuse, and idiots like Steve Johnson, it’s great to be reminded of how sports can generate so much hope and charity through movements like this one. If you haven’t ever seen the iconic Jim Valvano speech or would like to learn more about the foundation check out http://jimmyv.convio.net
There’s plenty more great sports action across the country tonight. From Seattle, where the NFL has another Thursday Night showcase, to the tipoff of the Big East/SEC challenge, and even to the ice as Syd the Kid and Alexander Ovechkin go at it again, there’s plenty to watch and pick in the 1st day of December as we begin a new month of ESPN Streak for the Cash goodness. You can find all my picks and directions to join our group after the jump. For more on tonight’s big NFL game and the early games on Sunday, come back at noon time for part 1 of our mega-preview of week 13. Tomorrow we’ll have our daily rounds along with all the fantasy baseball news of the week, and then on Saturday we’ll have all the player updates you need along with part 2 of the NFL week 13 preview. All that and more coming your way here at Fantasy CPR, where fantasy sports knows no offseason.
I finished November with 51 wins and a fairly nice percentage, but the problem was I could never get enough of them strung together to get a streak of more than 5. If you hesitated to jump into our group last month, today’s the day as we all start from 0 for this new month of December. All you have to do is follow the link on our leagues and groups page (in the top bar) or search the group directory for Fantasy CPR. It’s free to play and our group is open to the public so jump on in. There’s a lot of different ways to go on this Thursday, but here’s my picks for today as we get rollin’ into the month of December…
3:05-SV Salzburg win or draw: whenever the home team is getting the draw it’s a very tempting pick, since home field is such an advantage especially when playing teams from out of country. Salzburg is an Austrian team hosting Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from France. Salzburg is undefeated at home in league play (3 wins and 3 draws) and in Europa League play they have a 3-1-1 home record. PSG is slightly higher in the group since they beat Salzburg 3-1 back in September. PSG, however is a different team on the road and hasn’t scored a goal yet in road games after drawing the team at the bottom of the table 0-0 in it’s last road game. Since it’s in Salzburg I’ll go with them to at least get a draw with a confidence level (CL) of 2 1/2 out of 5.
7:05-South Carolina: Providence will travel to South Carolina in one of the opening matchups of the Big East/SEC challenge. Don’t pick this just based on records since both these teams have played close games and Providence has played the easier schedule. South Carolina played close with the other USC (Southern Cal) in their last game but has disturbing losses on the record to Elon and Tennessee State. Providence has lost to Northern Iowa and and Iowa State, but has only beaten teams like Southern, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Holy Cross. South Carolina gets this one at home which in college hoops is a huge deal so I’ve got to lean towards them to overcome Providence using their size down low to turn this into a battle on the boards. If there was anything else on the board that would let me get back for the late game I’d take it since I only have a CL 1 1/2 on this one. Neither team is really that good, but since it’s early in the month and I’ve got no streak rollin’ yet it’s the time to take fliers like this so you can make it back for…
10:30-LA Kings: The Kings are the pick of the day as they host the visiting Florida Panthers. The Kings and Florida don’t face each other much, but when they do it’s been all LA since 2002 as they’ve got the last 6 meetings by a combined score of 22-10. The Kings shuffled their lines and may have started to solve their problems on the offensive end as they converted 2 goals in a win over San Jose on Monday. The Panthers have had a good start to the season but lost their last game to Tampa 5-1 and have to travel coast-to-coast making the Kings the pick here with a CL of 3.
Final stats for November
Longest streak: 5
overall record: 51-39-3
pick of the day: 2-2
