Fantasy Sports Daily Rounds-December 17

On a slow on-the-field sports day, it seemed like every significant news story revolved around a court, and not the hardwood but a legal court. From the on-going Sandusky drama to Barry Bonds to even Kobe Bryant’s wife, sports stories were sad, depressing and overall disenchanting. There was some great sports action though if you looked a little harder than the big names and headlines.

On the field, the day belonged to the little guys. As there was some quality football played in the NCAA Division III national championship as the University of Wisconsin Whitewater defeated Mount Union 13-10 to claim the title for the third consecutive year. It went down as  a solid, defensive struggle where a defensive lineman won MVP for causing a game-changing fumble. Congratulations to the Warhawks and their fans on 3 years in a row… In other smaller-school football action Sam Houston State and Montana faced off in what turned out to be a close FCS semi-final with Sam Houston holding on to win 31-28 (the led 21-0 after the first quarter). The second semi-final is today as Georgia Southern takes on North Dakota State. It’s a pick in Streak for the Cash today, and I’m not confident enough to take it (my picks after the jump), but I’m leaning Georgia Southern’s way setting up a great final matchup. Leave it to the smaller schools to give us a football playoff system done right. Bowls are fun, but these divisions show  how great a playoff could be.

Today at FantasyCPR we’ll start the bowl season by looking ahead to the Hawaii Bowl with picks and analysis coming your way at noon. Check out the archives for picks for the bowls today (New Mexico, New Orleans, and the ever-popular Idaho Potato Bowl. Later this afternoon I’ll check back in with any big injury news (here’s yesterday’s outlook) as we look forward to an exciting week 15 in the NFL (mega-preview with NFL Picks). My streak for the cash picks are right after the jump, and we’ve got some exciting NBA coverage coming your way in the next few days as well, so set your bookmarks and keep comin’ back to FantasyCPR, keepin’ fantasy sports alive 365.

Yesterday I went 1 up and 1 down with my picks, but due to internet issues and my lack of confidence in the picks I just stayed put at W4. I’ll go for my 3rd W5 of the month today since there’s quite a bit of variety and quality on the board today. Gotta love Saturdays; here’s what I like on the slate today:

11:05-Pittsburg State: In one of the better picks of the day we’ll stick with our small-school theme and go to the DII championship game where heavy favorites Pittsburg St. (who are from Kansas btw) host a Cinderella team in Wayne State. Any time you can pick a team called the Gorillas, it’s worth taking a look at, and when they’re favored by 10.5 and the pick is straight up in streak, it’s an obvious one. Wayne State had 3 losses during the season and Pittsburg State had just 1, and the game is in Kansas so I’ll take the Gorillas with a confidence level (CL) of 4 out of 5.

6:30-Syracuse double digit victory: The Orange leave New York for the first time as they travel to NC State. They’ve been beating teams by an average of almost 23 points, and the Wolfpack have lost 3 in a row against ranked opponents. NC St is 6-3 but had lost 2 in a row before bouncing back and defeating North Carolina Central by only 5 points. It’s no sure thing but I think Jim Boeheim will once again have his players focused and they’ll win this first road test easily and hold on to that #1 ranking for another week.

9:05-Washington Capitals: From DII college football, to top 25 college hoops, and now to the frozen ponds of Colorado, this is why Streak for the Cash is so cool. You can pick whatever interests you and have an instant rooting interest. The Caps seem to be slowly getting things turned around as they’ve won 4 out of their last 5 as they head into Denver to face the Avs. Colorado has been playing better at home (4 in a row) but still remains under .500 in the Pepsi Center (8-9-0) and have had issues with their #1 goaltender ex-Cap Semyon Varlamov. I think Ovechkin and the boy’ll pull this one in and I’ll go with Washington with a CL: 3

Enjoy a sports-filled Saturday today and make sure you get all your lineup prep done before tonight’s NFL game and then tomorrow’s full slate. Have a great Saturday!
