Don’t worry, Portland Trail Blazers fans, I promis to stay away from your team for the rest of the month. I’ve picked the Blazers 3 times now this season. I’m 0-3, and in the games I haven’t picked Portland they’re 7-0. The only favor they did me last night was getting it over with quickly enough that I could get CP3’s free throw to win the 3rd quarter prop in the Clippers-Heat thriller. As a result of that 3-point play (made FT) I start today on a 1 pick winning streak. Here’s where I’m headed today:
1:00-K J Choi win or tie: This is a 9 hole prop, which is a gift from the streak-setters. As long as I don’t have a W3 or more I’ll always take the player with the tie. Last summer, it was some incredible number of “win or tie” picks that won 9 hole props in a row. I know it was over 15 but don’t think it got quite to 20. Choi is matched here with Webb Simpson, and while neither is on my fantasy golf team for this week, both are expected to do well. Choi missed the cut in this tournament last year but is a previous winner (2008) so I feel pretty confident in this one to start the streak day off right.
8:00-New York Knicks: the Knicks come in off a big win at MSG last night over the previously streaking Sixers. The defense has been strong in their recent run of 4 wins in a row including 2 road games. The Knicks front court of Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire have been dominating at both ends of the floor which doesn’t bod well for a short-handed Memphis Grizzlies frontline. The Grizz are missing Zach Randolph for the next few weeks as he continues his return from injury and they’ll feel that loss in this game for sure. Carmelo Anthony has been tearing it up lately as well averaging 26 points 6 boards and 5 assists in his last 5 games. ‘Melo plays well in Memphis as well. The Knicks are on the back half of a back-to-back, but I think they’ll come out with energy and get the win on national TV as the game is the TNT spotlight game.
10:40-Golden State 3 pointers: The Warriors will host Orlando in the nightcap on TNT. It’s the Warriors 3’s against the winning margin for the Magic. The Warrior knocked off the Heat 2 nights ago at home and will try to complete the Florida sweep as the Magic come south from where they beat Portland last night. Golden state makes 6.1 three-pointers per game while the Magic allow 5.7. I do expect the game to be high-scoring and most likely be close. The only way to lose this is if Orlando blows out the Warriors. So far at home the Warriors beat the Bulls, Knicks, and Heat while losing by 1 shot to the Jazz. In their last back-t0-back on the road the Magic lost to the lowly Pistons. If this were a straight up pick, it would be tempting to take teh Warriors, but I probably wouldn’t. When you give me 6-8 points, I’ll jump at it and close out my day with Monta and the Warriors. There’s also a chance that Stephen Curry returns which only will boost this offense, but at the time of this writing that still isn’t a sure thing. The Warrior, I think, are a sure thing and should finish your day in the green.
