Spot Starter Selections-April 23

There’s 11 games on today’s MLB schedule with just 4 in the American League and 7 in the National League including a double-header for the Giants and Mets at Citi Field. With many teams traveling or getting ready for their next series, the spot starter options are a little limited today, but theres still some options if you’re taking the streaming starter strategy or just looking to start the week off with a bunch of starts/innings.

Yesterday, my 3 selections had mixed results. Dillon Gee was a total washout with the Mets game being rained out and he’ll go in game 2 of the double-header today. If you grabbed him, you can still use him but the matchup isn’t quite as favorable and 2nd games of double-headers can be dangerous if the bullpen gets thinned out in game 1. Danny Duffy got knocked around a bit although he was cruising until a rough 4th inning, but my best pick was my 3rd listed pick as I highlighted Anthony Bass who was going against the Phillies at Petco. He ended up going 6 innings with 7 K’s and only allowing 1 unearned run on his way to a W.

Hopefully these three picks fare as well as Bass did in tonights action:

Bartolo Colon-Oak: (28.8% ownership in ESPN leagues) There’s not a more surprising start to the season for a starting pitcher than Colon’s. He did get pounded in one of his 4 starts but in his other 3 has given up a single run in 23 innings. His total ERA coming into the game is 2.63 and he is the AL leader in W’s with 3. He’ll face off against the White Sox today and Jake Peavy who’s having a renaissance year of his own. It’s a tough matchup, but Colon has been on his game and makes a solid available starter today.

Bruce Chen-KC: (4.3%) Chen and the Royals are desperate for a win as they continue their opening season slide. Chen’s pitched well with an ERA of 2.00 and a WHIP of .83 in his first 3 starts (18 innings). He doesn’t strike out a ton of batters, 14 so far this year, but has a .203 BAA and has faced the Tigers and Angels. Today he’ll get the Blue Jays as the Royals continue to hunt for their first home win. I expect another solid start from Chen, but expecting a win from the Royals might be too much.

Wade Miley-Ari: (0.0%) Miley is making a spot start out of the ‘pen for the D-Backs today in place of Daniel Hudson. He’s been solid so far this season in 8 2/3 innings. He gave up 3 runs his last time out against the red-hot Braves, but came into that game without allowing a run in his first 7 innings. He isn’t a strike-out guy, but he’s going against the Phillies lineup which isn’t scoring runs on anyone. He probably won’t go long in this one, but you might be able to sneak a win and some quality innings from this matchup at Chase Field in Phoenix.
