Fantasy Baseball Closers-Drafting Dangerously for Saves

Drafting closers is a strategy most experienced players and experts avoid in fantasy baseball. Closers are a volatile group. Some of the best closers from previous years can struggle in the new season (yes, Heath Bell, we’re looking at you). At the same time, some closers can come from nowhere like Fernando Rodney who wasn’t supposed to even be a closer and now has nine saves.

The MLB leader in saves is Chris Perez from the Indians. He was available at the end of most drafts since the Indians were not supposed to be any good and he isn’t the cleanest closer in the Bigs. He’s gotten it done with an ERA of 2.84 and a WHIP of 1.11 and only nine strikeouts.

Sometimes, big names deliver like Craig Kimbrel an Jonathan Papelbon have to this point. The problem with drafting closers is the unpredictability in the role. Brian Wilson, Heath Bell, and Jason Motte were all top closer picks who have not delivered due to injury, ineffectiveness, and lack of opportunities.
