As the full schedule around the Major Leagues resumes Tuesday night, there’s some solid options if you’re in need of starting pitching. This session got off to a nice start for our spot starters Sunday as you can see in the payoff below. Hopefully, we can keep the roll going with the picks for Monday (results posted as they become available) and these selections for scheduled starters for Tuesday, June 19.
Aaron Harang – LAD: (owned in 10.5% of ESPN leagues) Last time out, Harang went seven strong against the Angels allowing just two unearned runs. He got the no decision for that start, but is a solid 5-3 on the year with 64 strikeouts in 77.2 innings, a 3.59 ERA, and a 1.36 WHIP. Tuesday night he and the Dodgers visit Oakland and he’ll face the free-swinging A’s who are 24th in the MLB in runs and 30th in batting average. Expect a solid start from Harang as he goes against Brandon McCarthy in the series opener.
Mike Leake – Cin: (1.9%) Returning for the second day in a row to the battle for Ohio, I’ll go with Mike Leake against the Tribe in Cleveland. He lasted just 4.1 innings his last time out as he battle through illness and left with the lead giving up three runs and striking out six. Prior to that outing he had allowed just one earned run in three of five starts and is a solid option for the hot Reds as they face Josh Tomlin (3-4, 5.56 ERA).
Scott Diamond – Min: (36.8%) Diamond has a nice matchup as he faces the Pirates in Pittsburgh at 7:05 Tuesday. Even after one of his worst outings of the year (four runs in six innings against Philadelphia) his ERA is still a miniscule 2.13. He’s 5-2 with a 1.18 WHIP and a .270 BAA. He does pitch to contact striking out just 29 in 50.2 innings but has been a highly effective and accurate (just six walks in eight starts) starter for Minnesota since his callup earlier this year.
