Friday brings another full slate of MLB action our way as teams settle in for their weekend series. All the games are at night except the Astros vs. Cubs which takes place at the Wrigley special 2:20 PM ET time.
If you’re in trouble with your ERA, WHIP, or total wins as the week winds down, don’t panic since there’s still time if you can make the right roster moves. Every day, you can find spot starter picks here at FantasyCPR. Check out our archive and see how our picks have done at the bottom of the page.
There’s still some great pickups widely available for the weekend. Here’s our four best pickups for Friday’s games who are owned in less than half of ESPN leagues (percentage in parentheses):
Ross Detwiler – Was: (11.1%) In his last outing, Detwiler returned to the rotation and pitched five shutout innings against the Orioles. In 16 games (10 starts) he has a 1.21 WHIP and a 3.09 ERA. He’ll face the Braves in Atlanta on Friday as the NL East rivals fight it out fir first place in the division. He’ll match up against Randall Delgado who has been knocked around lately, and should be in a good place to pick up the win if he pitches effectively again.
Mike Leake – Cin: (4.3%) For some reason, Leake’s ownership continues to be low despite a string of strong starts. He allowed just two runs in eight innings his last time out ans has allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his last 10 games. He enters Friday’s start with a 4.46 ERA still stinging from some early beatings and a 1.32 WHIP. He faces off with Matt Cain and the Giants in a late game Friday which should be a typical Giants game: low scoring and close. Leake’s not a good bet for a win facing Cain, but should be safe from getting shelled by a Giants lineup that has struggled to score runs (21st in the league).
Bud Norris – Hou: (36.1%) The Astros welcome back Bud Norris who will face the Cubs in his return to the rotation after spending time on the DL with a sprained left knee. It’s his first game back, but it is against the Cubs who are off to a horrendous start to the season. Norris had 13 starts before heading to the DL and struck out 81 in 73 innings with a 5-4 record, a 4.81 ERA, and a 1.42 WHIP. If you need K’s, Norris is a great add either in a spot start or more permanently.
Jose Quintana – ChW: (20.9%) Quintana is a risky pickup as he faces the Yankees in New York, but in his favor is the fact that he’ll face off against Adam Warren a Yankees call-up expected to make his MLB debut against a red-hot White Sox lineup. Quintana has been hot as well allowing no runs while pitching eight innings in each of his last two starts. Overall on the year he’s pitched 43.1 innings in six starts with a 1.25 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. He doesn’t strike out a ton of batter, just 24 so far this season, but finds ways to get outs and avoid baserunners leading to his effectiveness early in his career.
