Fantasy Baseball Spot Starter Pickups for July 4

If you find yourself off to as bad a start as Daisuke this week in fantasy baseball, it’s time to step things up and make some moves. There’s some nice options on Tuesday, and here’s three pitchers I like scheduled to start on Wednesday who are owned in less than half of ESPN leagues.

The Picks

Franklin Morales – Bos: (18.6%) Since joining the Red Sox rotation, Morales has gone 18 innings and allowed just four runs while striking out 24. He’s coming off his best start of the year his last outing when he shutout the Mariners for seven innings while limiting them to just three hits. He took the no decision since he was dueling King Felix, but he’s been a great addition for the Sox and can help your fantasy team if you pick him up for his start in the final game of the Sox series in Oakland at 4:05 Wednesday.

Mike Leake – Cin: (6.5%) The Reds will face old teammate Aaron Harang and Mike Leake will take the hill in the 9:10 series finale in Dodger Stadium. Leake went the distance his last time out holding San Francisco to a run on nine hits with four strikeouts picking up his third win of the season. In his last three starts, he’s allowed a total of four runs while going seven, eight, and nine innings. The Dodgers offense had been struggling and this is a nice matchup to end the first half for Leake.

Chris Young – NYM: (1.3%) In five starts this season, Young has been a solid 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA and and a 1.40 WHIP. He’s allowed exactly two runs in four of his starts even though they’ve been against the Rays, Reds, and Yankees. Wednesday afternoon he faces the Phillies at home and makes a solid pickup if you need strikeouts (18 in 30 innings) or a win.

The Payoff

Here’s how our picks have done over the past week including Monday’s mixed results. We got two strong starts from Homer Bailey and Clayton Richard, but Daisuke’s stiff neck that he tried to pitch through hurt us and the Red Sox.

Morales has been pushed back to Friday for the Red Sox with Aaron Cook sliding into his spot. I like Leake and Young better than Cook, but he’s a decent option along with Dallas Keuchel of the Astros if Young and Leake are gone
