Happy Independence Day, streakers! ESPN’s got 13 matchups for the picking today even including the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. There’s also plenty of baseball, some tennis, and the usual cycling to have on the side with your 61 or fewer or 62 or more hot dogs.
Yesterday, my perfect run fell early with Kvitova dropping straight sets to suddenly on-a-mission Serena. The rest of the day I went 2-1 with my baseball picks as the Mariners came all the way back but still broke my personal streak of six to start the month. The Mets and White Sox came through though leaving me with a solid record with my picks overall as you can see at the bottom of the page.
Picks for the 4th
6:20-Mark Cavendish: There’s really no reason to go against him despite the fact it’s one-vs-the-field. He just never seems to lose a prop like this. Not last year, and so for not this year. Confidence Meter: 3 (out of 10)
12:35-61 hot dogs or fewer: Joey Chestnut is the presumptive favorite and with Kobayashi not in the competition he shouldn’t need a huge number to pull out the victory. It’s no sure thing though since last year he won with 62 and three years ago he chowed 68. His 67 in 2007 is the only other time anyone has gone over, so I’ll go under. Confidence Meter: 5.
4:05- Boston Red Sox : Usual disclaimer- As a huge Red Sox fan I have trouble being objective. With that out of the way, Franklin Morales has been light’s out since entering the rotation (more here). The Red Sox seem to have left their bats back on the East Coast but they should be able to produce enough offense against A.J. Griffin to get the win here and give the people back in Boston more to celebrate on the 4th of July. Confidence Meter: 6
7:05- Texas Rangers : The Rangers are the best team in baseball and although Scott Feldman is probably the weakest link in their rotation I think they’ll take this one from Chicago. For props I’d go yes, yes, and fewer, but I’m more confident of the overall win for Texas. Confidence Meter: 6
10:40-Philadelphia Union to win, tie, or lose by 1: Not sure how you could pick against the Philadelphia Union on July 4. Plus, the Galaxy have only won one of their last 11 MLS games by two goals or more. The Union are just 3-2-9 on the MLS season but haven’t lost by two since the opener on March 12. While none of this makes this prop a lock, it does indicate that going with the Union is the right way to close out Independence Day. Confidence Meter: 7
Overall Picks: 9-3
Picks with Confidence over 5: 3-2
Current Personal Streak: W5
