Friday’s fine for Streaking! With 13 picks on the board, it shapes up to be a full and exciting day of picking matchups with Wimbledon and the Tour de France getting us started, soccer and golf in the middle of the day, and plenty of MLB action Friday night. Hey, there’s even some CFL action if you like to pick north of the border.
Yesterday my two most confident picks pulled out wins and I lost the other two. Serena and the Pirates came through while the Brewers and Reds let me down. I’m up to a W5 personally and these are the picks and my confidence level heading into Friday, July 6.
Picks-of-the-day for July 6
8:05- Novak Djokovic: Djokovic has won the last three meetings between these two tennis superpowers and six of the last seven. Ironically in 26 matches the two have never met in Wimbledon. Both players appear in good form coming off of straight set victories in the quarterfinals and it should be a great semifinal matchup. Federer has won this tournament six times in his career, but Djokovic is the defending champion. Confidence Meter: 5 (out of 10)
10:35- Andy Murray: Could this finally be Murray’s year? Tennis fans in Britain have been waiting for their native son to make this run and now he’ll face the Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second semi-final. The two have met six times in the past. Most recently they faced off in the AEGON Championships last year. That tournament is also played in England and also played on grass. Murray won in three sets. Murray has taken five of the six meetings and the last four. It’s not a given, but Murray will have the home court advantage and has looked to be in good form thus far in the tournament. He struggled with seventh-ranked David Ferrar in the last round but won in four sets as Tsonga did over 27th ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber. Confidence Meter: 7
1:00-Gary Woodland: The former Kansas Jayhawk finished fourth on this course last year. Woodland has been going through some major work on his swing with Butch Harmon and has had a rough year, but he was even par yesterday. Meanwhile, his opponent in this prop Vijay Singh shot a remarkable -7 to take sole possession of the lead. Sigh’s success came out of nowhere though and I have a feeling it’s just a single-round success. Woodland gets the tie and my pick, but only with a Confidence Level: 2 1/2
7:05- Atlanta Braves: The Phillies suffered another tough loss last night to the Mets. Kyle Kendrick (2-8, 5.35 ERA) will try to be a stopper against the visiting division-rival Braves. Atlanta won yesterday to finish up a four-game split with the Cubs. I’ll go with the Bravos and Tim Hudson who has been good this season against pretty much every team not named “Washington Nationals.” This is his first start against the Phillies this season. Confidence Meter: 5
10:05- Oakland Athletics: I think that Tommy Milone makes a great pickup as a spot starter as he goes at home where he’s been great against a Mariners team that can’t hit. Oakland is coming off sweeping the Red Sox behind great pitching (or poor hitting by Boston). Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss have picked up the offense, and with Yoenis Cespedes back Oakland’s lineup has fewer holes than it has had most of the season. The A’s are trying to get back to .500 and are having a decent season as they welcome Seattle in for their final series of the first half. Confidence Meter: 6
