As another week of fantasy baseball winds down, many teams may find themselves in need of a boost in starting pitching related categories. Every team is in action across the country, and these three players are in good position to have a good start and are owned in less than 50% of ESPN leagues.
Paul Maholm – ChC: (15.7%) Maholm has been on a roll since the end of June. He’s won his last five starts and has allowed no more than one run in any of those starts. He faces the Cardinals at home and the St. Louis offense has been rolling. Last time out I stayed out from Maholm since he was facing the Pirates who were rolling. He did just fine striking out seven while allowing a run on four hits in eight innings. He’s been good all year at home going 6-2 with a 2.78 ERA. He’s also been good during the day going 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA.
Travis Blackley – Oak: (3.1%) Blackley cruised past the Blue Jays last time out allowing five hits and a run in seven innings on his way to his third win of the year. In his 17 games this season he’s 3-2 with a 2.69 ERA. He’ll face off with the Orioles in the finale of the A’s-O’s three-game set on Sunday afternoon as Oakland looks to keep rolling through July.
Will Smith – KC: (0.0%) Smith is coming off his best MLB start as he held the Angels offense which was hot at the time to just two hits and a run in seven innings. Tomorrow he’ll face the Mariners at Safeco Field. It’s a favorable scenario for him and he’ll look to build on his excellent last outing.
