Starting Pitchers for August 9 to pickup for Fantasy Baseball

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Thursday is a tough day for Fantasy Baseball owners with only nine games on the schedule. The AL has only four games, two in the afternoon and two at night. The NL has three in the afternoon and two at night as teams either start series early (like the Reds and Cubs) or finish them later than the rest of the league.

Don’t worry though, there are still values to be had on the starting pitching market. If you need a starter, here’s the three that are on waiver wires in more than 50% of ESPN leagues that I would look for:

The Picks

Wei-Yin Chen – Bal: (owned in 44.8% of leagues) Chen has been great in his last two starts allowing no earned runs over 12.2 winnings with 16 K’s and just eight hits allowed. Thursday he’ll face the Royals at Camden Yards as he goes for win number 11. He’s 10-6 with a 1.20 WHIP and a 3.46 ERA in 22 starts this season. He’s been especially good lately and is the top pickup if he’s available in your league. He just makes it in under our 50% line…

Lucas Harrell – Hou: (2.3%) Since Chen may not be a option for many owners, Harrell is a solid second choice. He faces the Nats at Minute Maid Park. Harrell’s been good lately giving up two runs or fewer in his last five starts and seven of his last eight. He’s also been especially good at home with a 6-1 record and 2.02 ERA. He’s even managed a winning record for the lowly Astros with his 9-7 mark on the year. He’ll look for win number 10 against Washington. He may not get the run support he needs, but you should be able to expect a quality start from him either way.

Felix Doubront – Bos: (24.6%) Doubront is the Red Sox winningest starting pitcher but has not been able to find a W in his last three outings. He usually gets solid run spoort which should continue as the Sox face Ubaldo Jimenez and the struggling Indians. Be careful though his WHIP and ERA are both high (1.45 and 4.56 respectively) and the Indians may be able to get to him for some runs. Doubront is a better option than Harrell for wins, but has struggled in other categories making him the 3rd best overall pickup option among those owned in less than 50% of ESPN leagues.
