It’s the end of an era today in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash game. It’s the final day we’ll have Olympic picks in the morning to get our day started. It’s just the men’s basketball final today then all MLB all the time with a MLS chaser to wrap things up at 11:05 tonight.
Yesterday my picks struggled to 3-2 but the two losses were my most confident picks as Brazil upset by Mexico for the gold in soccer and Justin Verlander and the Tigers lost to the Rangers. I bounced back with two MMA picks to finish on a two-game winning streak coming into today. Here’s my favorite picks for Sunday:
Picks for 8/12
1:35- St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals look to take the rubber game of this three game set behind Lance Lynn who is going for his 14th win of the season. The Cards are within 1 1/2 games of the Wild Card leaders and will need to defeat Vance Worley to close the gap further. Worley has had a solid year but I like St. Louis’s lineup way better than Philly’s at this point and I’ll go with the Redbirds to get me the green. Confidence Meter: 5 (out of 10)
4:10- Washington Nationals: I told you here that I like Ross Detwiler as a spot starter. The Nats are going for their ninth win in a row after edging Arizona 6-5 yesterday. I think they’ll get it against Patrick Corbin although Corbin has been tough his last two starts allowing just two runs in 12 innings. It’s not as much of a lock as some people think, but I do think the Nats are the better pick. Confidence Meter:2
8:08- Atlanta Braves: The Ben Sheets renaissance hits National TV as the Braves visit the Mets on Sunday Night Baseball. After taking two fulls years off in 2009 and 2011, Sheets has been great in five starts for Atlanta going 4-1 with a 1.41 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Much of his success can be attributed to control as evidenced by his 23:7 strikeout to walk ratio. He’ll face of with the inconsistent Jonathan Niese who has had an up and down year like many of the Mets. The Braves are the better team and have the better starter so I’ll go Atlanta in this one. Confidence Meter: 6 Quick note-on props I’d go with any other result, Braves, and Yes.
11:05- LA Galaxy: It’s the third edition of the 2012 SuperClasico as the Galaxy takes on their stadium-mates Chivas USA. Both teams play in the Home Depot Center in LA and this game will officially be a home game for Chivas, not that it matters much. The Galaxy will be stinging from a 4-0 beatdown in Seattle and looking to secure their playoff spot. Beckham is expected to be unavailable, but I still think that Chivas will have a hard time stopping a potent Galaxy attack. Prior to their loss to the Sounders, LA appeared in good form of a five-game undefeated streak. I think they’ll bounce back and win this one 2-0. Confidence Meter: 5
Overall Record: 30-23
Confident Picks (5+): 11-10
Personal Streak: W2
