Saturday is full of Streak for the Cash options with 17 picks on the board. There’s EPL starting back up in the morning followed by ATP Tennis and PGA Golf in the early afternoon. Later on in the afternoon, there’s matchups featuring the Major Leagues of Baseball and Soccer. The evening has the usual MLB action with a preseason NFL game, more MLS, and WNBA as well.
Yesterday my streak picks continued their up-and-down month with a 2-3 performance. I was able to dodge the bullet though since I wasn’t able to get to my picks after my first one so I personally am on a W5 and hoping to improve with these picks.
Picks for 8/18
12:30- Tottenham win or draw: Tottenham visits Newcastle as the EPL season gets underway in full force tomorrow. Since Newcastle returned to the EPL the teams have met four times and the Magpies (Newcastle) have yet to win a single match. Newcastle United had a very solid season last year and many feel they overachieved and are in for a bit of regression this season. Tottenham has had an active transfer window after struggling down the stretch last season. Despite their struggles, they took out Newcastle 5-0 when they played at Tottenham in February. I’d have trouble picking if Newcastle was getting the draw, but with Tottenham getting it, I think it’s a fairly clear pick. Confidence Meter: 5 (out of 10).
1:10- Any Other Result: Djokovic and Del Potro just played for the Bronze Medal in London and Del Potro won the match in straight sets. The previous time they played Del Potro won when Djokovic retired in their Davis Cup match. The Djoker is good and I think he’ll take it this time, but I think it will take him three sets. Confidence Level: 4
2:05- Webb Simpson: Simpson was one of my pre-tournament picks as the defending champ at the Wyndham. Jimmy Walker is tied with Simpson going into round three, but he hasn’t been on this big stage before and I think he may struggle a bit while the US Open Champ Simpson pulls away. Confidence Level: 6
4:05- St. Louis Cardinals: The Pirates got a great performance from James McDonald last night and surprised the Cards taking game one. Tonight they’ll send Eric Bedard to the mound to face Lance Lynn. Lynn is 13-5 on the year with a 3.65 ERA. He’s struggled a bit recently but is 2-1 against Pittsburgh this year and 6-3 overall at home. On the other hand, Bedard is 3-8 with a 6.75 ERA on the road and is 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA against St. Louis this year. These division rivals know each other well and it should be a good game as they both jockey for playoff positioning heading into the last 6 weeks of the season. Confidence Meter: 4
7:10- Philadelphia Phillies: Cole Hamels has pitched back-to-back shutouts and hasn’t given up a run in 22 innings. He’ll ge opposed by Michael Fiers who had a nice run of his own going before getting hammered his last time out giving up eight runs in two innings in a rude welcome to Coors Field. The Phillies swept the Brewers last month and I think they’ll continue their domination of the series behind the most dominant of their highly-paid starters, Cole Hamels. Confidence Meter: 7
7:10- Li Na: I get it that Venus Williams is a bigger name, but why are 97.3% of picks for her right now??? She’s played Le Na twice and both times Na won, once in straight sets. Recent form would also point to Na who has who has won her last two matches 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1. Williams needed three sets to oust Samantha Stosur her last time out and has only won in straight sets in one of her four matches in this tournament. Li Na is currently the 11th ranked player while Williams has fallen all the way to #65. Venus has had a decent run in Cincinnati at the Western & Southern Open but Na is the smart pick here. Don’t follow the crowd headed for red in this one. Confidence Meter: 6
10:00- LA Sparks: The Sparks have won five in a row and have beaten Seattle four times in four meetings already this season. The Storm are good at home and have turned things around after a horrible start. The Sparks dynamic duo of Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike have been almost unstoppable and I don’t think that Seattle will be able to slow them down enough to win. Confidence Meter: 5
Overall Record: 44-35
Confident Picks (5+): 18-16
Personal Streak: W5
