Thursday’s Streak for the Cash slate has 11 picks on the schedule despits missing something we’ve had for the past six months-Major League Baseball. They’ll be back for the post-season; don’t worry. During this break, though, there’s still plenty of picking to do as we try to get things rolling this month.
My picks remained pretty mixed yesterday, and I’ve yet to get a nice string going during October. Here’s how I’m planning to build on my winning streak of one today:
October 4 Streak Picks
8:00- Metallurg Magnitogorsk: Metallurg is a heavy favorite even on the road since they recently added Evgeni Malkin. I’d stay away if you can, but this is the way to go early if you are in the red to start the day or find yourself strangely drawn to Russian Hockey while the NHL lockout continues. Confidence Meter: 3 (out of 10)
3:03- Vijay Singh: Singh made a somewhat surprising run in the playoffs getting all the way to the BMW Championship (the second to last tournament). Since the US Open Singh has made nine consecutive cuts and has three top 10’s during that time-period. Sean O’Hair gets the tie here but hasn’t played well recently making just two cuts in his last five events since finishing in the top ten at The Greenbrier Classic in early July. O’Hair may still be struggling with a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the PGA Championship. I usually always take the tie, but I’ll go with Vijay who has playing the better golf of the two lately. Confidence Meter: 5
3:05- Liverpool: Liverpool’s young stars have been impressive and they may even get veteran Joe Cole back from his hamstring injury. The Reds are also expected to have Jonjo Shelvey available as well despite his pending domestic suspension in the EPL. Liverpool won their Europa opener 5-3 while Udinese got a draw against Anzhi De Natale. At home, I think Liverpool needs and should be able to get the win although giving the draw is always tough. Confidence Meter: 4
7:32- Arkansas State: In a Sun Belt game in primetime Arkansas State visits Florida International in a matchup of bowl teams from last season who are below .500 this year. Arkansas State is coming off a tough loss to Western Kentucky but has one of the best rushing attacks in the nation and beat Memphis and Alcorn State at home in between trips to then-#5 Oregon and Nebraska where they took their lumps. Florida Atlantic is off to even a rougher start going 1-3 getting their only win against Akron in overtime. They’ve lost their last two games to Louisville and Louisiana-Lafayette. FIU has allowed opponents to average 38.6 points per game in their first four games which ranks them 112 out of 124 teams in the FBS.
8:30- Arizona Cardinals: The Rams are no pushover this year. They’ve already beaten a tough Seattle team and the rising Redskins in their two home games in the Edward Jones Dome. I’m not all in on the Cardinals yet, but I do think they’ll get the win here. ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped this knowledge on twitter @AdamSchefter early this morning “Since week 12 last season, Cardinals have gone 9-1, best in NFL. Cards seeking first 5-0 start since 1974 – when they were based in St. Lou.” I think the Arizona defense will stymy Sam Bradford and his still-suspect offensive line. Kevin Kolb and the Cards offense showed last week that they can put up points when they need to and this seems like a game that Larry Fitzgerald will get it done and carry Arizona to 5-0. Confidence Meter: 6
10:55- 3 Touchdowns or fewer: This pick is subject to change based on the first half, but I expect USC’s defense to shut down the Utes while the Trojans open up a big lead by halftime. Utah has struggled especially on the road where they scored just seven points in the desert at Arizona State in their last game. I’ll let you know on twitter @FantasyCPR if I’ve changed my mind.
