The second half of the month gets underway with plenty of kicks from around the world of soccer on this Tuesday. On what some might mistakingly think is a slow day in sports, there’s actually 13 picks as we go very international with today’s board.

Yesterday, I told you to be careful and I only picked one game personally all day and upped by current run to 7. My over picks ar still a shade below .500 so here’s hoping I can complete a Manning-like comeback after a ugly start to the month. Here’s the picks I like the most today:

BestPicks for 10/16

11:00- Russia by 3+: According to the official Streak twitter (below) this is the favored outcome. Russia should win easily, but three plus is a lot to ask so don’t be too confident. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

3:00- Spain win by 2+ goals: Spain is 14-11 all time against France and won 2-0 June 23 when the two met in June of this year. It was 4-0 when they played in 2011 and 2-0 when they played in Paris in a 2010 friendly. Spain’s men’s team really is that good, so I’ll take them and give the goal especially since the game is in Spain. Confidence Meter: 5

8:07-Detroit Tigers: Justin Verlander should be able to keep the Yankees bats stone cold as he looks to pick up his third win of the offseason. Except for the Jose Valverde meltdown the Yankees haven’t scored in the series, and now they’ll face the most dialed-in pitcher in the game. Since I would put any streak I had on this it truly is the rare Confidence Meter: 10

9:03- LA-Lafayette: In case you miss the Tigers pick or are allergic to picking teams from Detroit, Louisiana-Lafayette makes a good pick laster tonight as they visit Denton, Texas, to face the North Texas Mean Green in Sun Belt action. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 2-0 in conference and their only loss on the season was to Oklahoma State 65-24. North Texas is 2-4 overall but has played a tougher schedule dropping games to ranked teams LSU and Kansas State. The two do have a common opponent as both played Troy. North Texas lost 14-7 at home and ULL won at Troy 37-24. It’s a contrast in styles as the Cajuns pile up points but struggle defensively and the Mean Green play solid defense but struggle to score points. ULL is definitely the pick, but primetime games in these smaller conferences favor the home team so the Confidence Meter:is as high as it cal go.
