ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis-December 14

The Georgia Southern Eagles and their quarterback Jerick McKinnon (1) will face the top-ranked Bison of North Dakota State in one of the FCS Semifinals. For one of my ESPN Streak for the Cash picks, I think they’ll at least keep it close at the Fargodome. Photo by Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

It looks like Friday is another Ball-night on ESPN’s Streak for the cash but the FCS Semi-finals and the NCF Division III Championship break the basketball monopoly on tonight’s action. There’s early soccer as well as we look to get the green rolling as we get closer to the holidays this December. Here’s my top six pix for today:

Picks for 12/14

2:30- Any Other Result: Three goals is a lot against any team and Borussia Monchengladbach is no pushover sitting at 6-6-4 in the Bundesliga. Two of their losses have been by three or more at Borussia Dortmund 5-0 and at Werder Bremen 4-0. Bayern could win by three but only in one of their last six Bundesliga games have they had that margin so AOR is the better pick here. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

3:15- FC Porto wins by 2+: So far in La Liga FC Porto is 9-2-0 as they travel to play Vitoria Setubal who sits at 2-5-4. Setubal lost their last game to Estoril 3-0 and were beaten by Benfica 5-0 at home earlier this season. Benefica is at a similar level as Porto so I expect them to be able to win two or three-nil. Confidence Meter: 5

8:00- Minnesota Timberwolves: The Wolves will not get Ricky Rubio back until Saturday but will play their last game without him. Minnesota has won five of their last seven to get to 10-9 as they head to the Big Easy to take on the Hornets. New Orleans has lost their last five in a row and seven of their last eight. Anything can happen in the NBA in one game and Minnesota isn’t an elite team, but this feels like a pretty safe pick. Confidence Meter: 8

8:05- Georgia Southern wins or Single Digit Loss: Georgia Southern went on the road in the quarterfinals and beet Old Dominion 49-35 to earn the right to head to the Fargodome to take on the North Dakota State Bison. The Bison are the top-ranked team in the nation but win with their defense and tend to play closer low-scoring games. A perfect example is their 14-7 win over Wofford in the last round. If the Bison win, it will most likely be close and Georgia Southern definitely has the firepower and pedigree to crash the finals as the #5-seed. Confidence Meter: 5

9:00- Utah Jazz: Utah has started to get things rolling as of late winning four in a row including wins over the Spurs and Lakers in their last two games. They’ve struggled a bit on the road (4-9) but Phoenix is only 8-15 overall and had dropped seven in a row before beating Memphis their last time out. The Jazz play with tons of energy at home and need to step it up on the road. This should be a game where they can do that to beat the struggling Suns. Confidence Meter: 7

10:45- Denver Nuggets: The Grizz were the hottest team in the NBA early in the season but have dropped three of their last five. The Nuggets are 5-1 at home and played decent on their last road trip going 2-3 with close losses at New York, Atlanta, and Minnesota. They’ll be happy to get back to the Pepsi Center and can get back to .500 with a win in this one. Confidence Meter: 4
