ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis, January 11

Both the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks make nice picks today in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash, In this January 7 photo Kevin Garnett (5) and Tyson Chandler (6) jump for the ball to begin the game at Madison Square Garden. Photo byDebby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Today’s ESPN Streak for the Cash board is our regular weekly blend of early soccer from overseas and plenty of hoops action at night. There’s a PGA Sony Open prop thrown in for some added spice as well in today’s 14 picks.

Yesterday, my Oregon based upset-special paid off with both the Ducks and Blazers getting late wins. My personal streak went up in flames though as Saint Mary’s closed to within ten of Gonzaga late. Hopefully, I can build on yesterday’s success with these picks:

Streak Picks 1/11

12:50- Webb Simpson: In round one, Simpson shot a bogey-free -4 and is currently tied for seventh. Choi had a pair of birdies but also finished with four bogies for a final score of +2 putting him all the way back at tied for 109. Simpson is playing better and is a better player at this stage in his career but in a single round anything is possible. I feel pretty good about Simpson going forward in this tournament including a nice round today. Remember this will lock you up for the rest of the afternoon. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

2:45- Blackburn win or draw: Both teams have changed managers in the last month, and the Wolves have only won three of their last 17. This will be new manger Dean Saunders’s first game but I don’t think they’ll get the ship righted that quickly. Confidence Meter: 4

7:00- Loyola (MD) Greyhounds: Loyola is favored by two at home as they host the Fairfield Stags in MAAC action tonight. Loyola is 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference. Fairfield is 10-6 and 2-2 in conference play. The Stags lost at Niagara 71-67 in their last game snapping a six-game winning streak. Niagara also edged Loyola earlier this season 62-61. This should be a close game, but in college it’s always best to go with the home team in fairly even matchups. Confidence Meter: 3

7:30- Utah Jazz:  Utah is 4.5 point underdogs, but I think they’ll get the win in Atlanta tonight. The Jazz have won four of five including a pair of wins on the road in Charlotte and Phoenix. The Hawks have dropped their last four and five of six including their last game at home to the Celtics and their last two on the road against Minnesota and Cleveland. Atlanta is struggling and hoping a return home can revitalize their offense. Atlanta has dominated the recent series winning five of their last six against Utah, but I think the Jazz get one back tonight. Confidence Meter: 4

7:30- Boston Celtics: Boston hosts ole friend Kevin McHale and his Rockets tonight at the Garden. Houston won 101-89 when the sides played in Houston, but the Rockets oare just 7-9 on the road this season and are coming off a road loss to the Hornets. The Celtics are rolling since getting Avery Bradley back and have won their last four after a tough West Coast trip. The C’s are 11-6 at home and are getting great play from role players Jared Sullinger, Jason Terry, and Jeff Green. Confidence Meter: 6

8:10- New York Knicks:  The Knicks will get Melo back after losing last night in Indiana without him. Even on the second half of this back-to-back, I think they’ll have enough to take care of the Bulls at MSG tonight. New York is 13-4 at home and come into tonight as five-point favorites. Confidence Meter: 5

9:00- Wright State Raiders: In the second half of the Loyola marathon, the Loyola (IL) Ramblers are four-point favorites over Wright State. Don’t sleep on the Raiders though who are undefeated in the Horizon League in their first three. This will be their first in-conference road game. Wright State’s won seven of eight with their only loss coming at then-#11 Cincinnati by 10. Loyola-IL has struggled out of the gate in conference going 1-2 and losing their last two games at Green Bay and at home to Youngstown State. Wright State just played Green Bay as well and beat them easily at home by 11. The Raiders are the underdog, but I think they’ll keep their momentum rolling.  Confidence Meter: 4

10:40- Thunder Winning Margin: The Thunder roll into LA trying to hand the Lakers their sixth loss in a row. LA is languishing without its two big men Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard. The Thunder will have a big advantage down low and Russell Westbrook typically dominates Steve Nash. I think the Thunder win this one going away. Confidence Meter: 5
