ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis, January 14

The Chicago Bulls and forward Luol Deng take on the Atlanta Hawks tonight in one of the ESPN Streak for the Cash picks. There’s a lot of tough picks today, but you can find my favorites here. Photo by Kevin Liles-USA TODAY Sports

Monday in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash has the usual blend of early soccer and college and pro basketball later tonight. We’ve also got the Australian Open which means tennis in the morning Aussie time which translates to 10:00 at night on the east coast.

Two weeks into January my picks are way to close to .500 after a tough weekend so hopefully I can get things headed back in the right direction today. Here’s teh ones I like the most:

Streak Picks for 1/14

12:30- Asteras Tripoli: The soccer props are thin on this Monday so the only option is this matchup from the Greek Super League. Both teams are pretty bad. Kerkyra, who host this game, have dropped four in a row in League play all by the score of 2-0. Their slide has taken them to the bottom of the table with a league-worst -14 goal differential. Taking Asteras Tripoli to get the win would seem to be the way to go but their 1-3-4 road record is far from confidence-building. I’ll go with Tripoli, but stay away unless you’re just going straight-up for most wins or are in the red like I am. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

3:15- Estoril win or draw: Our second soccer prop is from the Portuguese Liga and is a bit better pick. Getting the draw, Estoril is up to -200 but these are both lower-level teams from La Liga. Confidence Meter: 2 1/2

7:03- UCONN 3-pointers made: The Huskies come home after a big win on the road on Saturday over then-#17 Notre Dame. Even when they’re winning, UConn doesn’t hit a ton of three-pointers averaging just over five per game and only making four in their ND win. In their last home game, a win over DePaul, they scored 99 points but only hit six three-pointers. The Louisville Cardinals are favored by 6.5 as they travel to Hartford, but I think the Huskies continue the trend of top teams going of the road and losing in-conference. UConn can win this game, and I think at least they’ll keep it within three. Picking against a powerful offense like Louisville’s is tough, so I don’t have a lot of confidence. Confidence Meter: 4

7:05- Washington Wizards: John Wall is back for Washington as they host the Orlando Magic tonight. The Wiz beat the Magic by eight a couple weeks ago and have won their last two games both at home over Oklahoma City and Atlanta. Orlando is coming off a nice win too as they knocked off the Clippers in LA snapping a ten-game losing streak. Whichever team is making its shots, especially from three-point range, will take this one, but I’ll go with the home team Washington who are favored by two. Confidence Meter: 3

8:05- Chicago Bulls: The Bulls host Atlanta tonight as the Hawks come in having dropped five of their last six including road losses in their last four on the road at Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland, and Washington. On the season, Atlanta is 9-9 on the road. Surprisingly, the Bulls are just 10-10 at home with some weird losses at the United Center lately to Houston, Charlotte, Milwaukee, and Phoenix. They have picked up some nice road wins over Miami and New York, and I expect them to pick it up at home starting with this game against Atlanta. Confidence Meter: 6

8:05-LA Clippers: The Clip-ship is actually underdogs as they visit Memphis who is an impressive 14-4 at home. Both teams took tough losses in their last game: Memphis falling in Dallas and LA losing at home to the Magic. Earlier this season, the Clippers handled the Grizz winning by nine in LA. These are definitely two of the best in the West and could be a Conference Finals preview. I think LA is the better team and they’ll be motivated to make a statement on the road. Plus, they’ll get Matt Barnes back from suspension. UPDATE: The Clippers will be without Chris Paul as they play tonight which completely changes this pick. I’ll go with Memphis at home instead with a CM: 5.

9:00- Kansas Wins by Double-Digits: This is a tough pick as the Bears of Baylor head to Allen Fieldhouse to take on the Jayhawks. KU has won 13 in a row and were able to avoid a strong upset bid by Iowa State in their last home game. Baylor definitely has the talent to challenge KU but have been inconsistent this season losing to the College of Charleston, Colorado, and Northwestern at home or on neutral courts. Their road-loss at then-#13 Gonzaga is understandable, and that loss is their only defeat in their last seven. Still, I have to go with Kansas at home to cover this number (favored by 10 1/2) and get the double-digit win. Confidence Meter: 3

9:06- Prairie View A&M: In this SWAC matchup bottom-dwellers PVAMU and Jackson State face off.  Prairie View is favored at home but only by six, but JSU is 1-13 on the year and 0-5 in conference. Prairie View got their lone in-conference win in their last game as they beat Grambling State by 16. Grambling State is 0-14 though, so that’s not much of a fete either. Because of that win and the fact that they’re at home, I’ll give the extra points and take PVAMU as the better of two pretty bad options in this one. Confidence Meter: 2

10:00- 8 games or fewer: This is an over/under for games Roger Federer will lose to Benoit Paire in his opening match down under. Fed beat Paire in their only previeous meeting 6-2, 6-2. That match was on indoor hard court, while this one is on outdoor hard court I expect similarly one-sided results. Confidence Meter: 5
