ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis, January 18

Friday’s Streak for the Cash board is full of matchups from a variety of sports around the world. Russian Hockey and Turkish, German, and Spanish Soccer join the PGA Tour in La Quinta to highlight the morning and afternoon picks. Tonight there’s a ton of basketball action from the Pro and college hardwoods and I expect we’ll get a few Australian Open picks as well.

Yesterday, my picks split right down the middle going 6-6 but I was able to get the three greens in a row to close out the day sticking to my most confident picks which went 4-0 on the day. Here’s who I like today and a quick look at why and how confident I am in each pick:

Streak Picks 1/18

8:00- Barys Astana: Streakers are flocking to CSKA Moscow with over 90% going with the road team. However, the odds are pretty even and Moscow just lost lots of their talent back to the NHL. They do have the better record, but may struggle now that they’ve lost those key players back to their US teams. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

12:10- Russel Henley or tie: Henley is coming off a better round one than his opponent Bo Van Pelt and won last week in Hawaii. Henley had a nice -8 while BVP was -6. This round will be on a different course, but getting the tie and with Henley’s current form there’s no reason to pick against the rookie. Confidence Meter: 5

2:30- Schalke 04 win: The Bundesliga hasn’t been in action for a month so its tricky to tell how these teams will come out. Schalke has had a manager change on top of the long layoff, but I’ll take them based on their home record of 5-2-2 at home while Hannover has struggled to 2-0-6 on the road. Confidence Meter: 3

3:00- Mallorca win or draw: Both these teams are near the bottom of La Liga. Mallorca is 4-5-10 while Espanyol is 4-6-9. Mallorca has been able to get a win or draw in two of three and Espanyol has won two of their last three outright. The reason I’ll go Espanyol is that they are 3-3-4 at home while Mallorca as usual is  struggling on the road with a 1-3-6 record. Confidence Meter: 4

7:00- Philadelphia 76ers: The Raptors have been playing better but are still just 4-16 on the road as they head to Philadelphia where the Sixers are 10-9. These teams have already played three times this season and Philadelphia has taken two of three. Toronto was lost three in a row and the Sixers have just one win in their last seven. The Sixers at home and with Jrue Holiday in a zone should be able to get the green. Confidence Meter: 3

7:02- Stony Brook Seawolves: The Seawolves are just three point favorites as they head to Burlington to face the Catamounts. Vermont has lost six games already this year including a pair at home against Towson and College of Charleston. Stony Brook beat Boston University by 28 in their last and BU beat Vermont three games ago. While a transitive corollary like that doesn’t always work, I do think the Seawolves have the better shot at this one. Confidence Meter: 6

7:10- Boston Celtics: The C’s and Bulls have split a pair of early games this season in Chicago. This game is a straight-up pick ‘em game, but I’ll take Boston at home where they are 13-7 this year. Luol Deng is day-to-day and if he’s unable to play Boston becomes an even better pick. The Celtics had won six in a row before falling to the Hornets while Chicago got a tight win in Toronto in their last game on Wednesday night. This could go either way, but I’ll go with the home team. Confidence Meter: 4

9:05-  Iona winning Margin or tie: At home, Iona is favored by six as they look to improve to 6-1 in the MAAC. They’ll face the Fairfield Stags who have struggled to a 2-4 start at their home arena the Hynes Athletics Center in New Rochelle, New York. Iona is a typically high-scoring team scoring 75+ in their lat three and in five of their last six. The average 82.5 points per game on the season good enough for fifth in the country. They should be able to pull away from Fairfield and win by at least 10 which should be enough to outscore the number of three’s the Stags can hit. Confidence Meter: 7

I’ll have my tennis picks on twitter @FantasyCPR later today when ESPN adds them to the board.
