ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis, January 20

In one of my favorite picks today in ESPN Streak for the Cash, The North Carolina State Wolfpack led by guard Lorenzo Brown (2) and forward C.J. Leslie (5) will welcome the Clemson Tigers into PNC Arena tonight as 10 point favorites. Photo by Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

Sunday seems slow after yesterday’s 40-pick bonanza, but ESPN Streak for the Cash has another full day of picks with 22 options ranging from the EPL this morning to plenty of NHL tonight with the NBA and men’s and women’s college basketball providing some bulk in the middle. The marquee matchups are of course the NFL Championship games which I’ve already previewed, so check out the links below for my full thoughts on those games.

Yesterday, my picks started out on fire but my last few all ended red leaving me on an L1 after building a solid streak early in the day. Hopefully I can bounce back with these picks today, and I can hand out some green picks for everybody. These are the options I like the most today:

Streak Picks for 1/20

11:00- Tottenham Hotspur Win or Draw: The streak pickers who just go on name recogntion could easily go down in this one as the Spurs host Man U. The Spurs have won five of their last seven outright and have earned scoreless draws in the other two matches. They haven’t lost at home since November 3 and have climbed all the way to number four in the table. Man U sits atop that table with an impressive 18-1-3 mark. They seem intent on recapturing the league championship from their cross-city rival and are locked in on EPL play. They’ve done will in the FA Cup as well, but they did have a replay which forced them to play a mid-week game meaning this will be their third game in a seven-day span. The Red Devils may be vulnerable to being beaten, but I see a draw as a likely outcome in this one. Confidence Meter: 2

12:30- Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers head to Buffalo for the Sabres season-opener after losing to the Penguins yesterday at home. The Flyers won all four games last year and will be looking to avoid an 0-2 start in this strike-shortened season. I think they’ll be able to get the win on the road in this game. Confidence Meter: 4

1:50- Scott Stallings: Stallings has played exceptionally in the Humana Challenge and has been able to open up a five stroke lead over a chasing pack of five golfers. While it’s definitely possible one of them could catch him, it’s not the most likely outcome as the Worcester, Massachusetts native should be able to get his third career PGA Tour victory. The only downside to this pick is that it will lock your entry for most of the afternoon. Confidence Meter: 6

Jan 12, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) celebrates after a play during the fourth quarter of the NFC divisional round playoff game against the Green Bay Packers at Candlestick Park. 3:05- San Francisco 49ers: I gave you 10 reasons I think San Francisco will win this game in a post you can read by clicking hereConfidence Meter: 7

3:06- Matt Ryan: With the ground game of the 49ers and Kaepernick’s ability to run if this was a total yards prop, I’d take Kaepernick. However, this only counts passing yards so I think Ryan is the way to go. Be careful though, these yardage picks tend to be squirelly. Confidence Meter: 3

5:00- No Falcons don’t score a TD in the 3rd Quarter: The 49ers defense isn’t going to give up many touchdowns. This is a coin-flip pick. Confidence Meter: 2

6:05- NC State wins by Double-Digits: After the Wolfpack went on the road and lost to Maryland, they’ll come home to face the Clemson Tigers in one of the few college hoops games today. They’re favored by right around ten, and they’ve won against the spread in each of their last three. Clemson is coming off a pair of home wins over Wake and Virginia, but in their last two road games they’ve lost to Duke and Coastal Carolina by 18 and 23 respectively. Clemson is playing better, but NC State can score points in bunches and had won 10 in a row before losing at Maryland. Those wins included six double-digit wins, an upset of then-#1 Duke, a win over UConn, and a road win at BC. With their high shooting percentage and scoring average, I think they’ll easily outpace the overmatched Tigers. Confidence Meter: 6

6:35- Ravens Win or Single Digit Loss: As I wrote in today’s post (available by clicking here), I think the Patriots will win this game. However, I doubt it will be a rout. Seems like a close game will be the most likely outcome either way based on past meetings. Confidence Meter: 5

6:36- 3 TD Passes or Fewer: This game won’t be a defensive struggle, but four touchdowns is a lot to expect. It could open up, but I don’t think it’ll be in the first half. Although Tom Brady has shown us he can go off for this many in a quarter, so anything can happen. Confidence Meter: 4

Jan 19, 2013; Dallas, TX, USA; Dallas Stars left wing Loui Eriksson (21) and center Derek Roy (11) and defenseman Alex Goligoski (33) and right wing Jaromir Jagr (68) and defenseman Stephane Robidas (3) celebrate the goal by Eriksson against the Phoenix Coyotes during the third period at the American Airlines Center. 8:00- Dallas Stars: The 1-0 Minnesota Wild host the similarly 1-0 Dallas Stars. The Stars used to be the North Stars of Minnesota but haven’t been kind to their successors in their last few meetings. Dallas has won their last three meetings behind solid performances from goalie Kari Lehtonen. If Lehtonen gets the start, I think the Stars get the win. Confidence Meter: 3

8:00- Southern Illinois: The Salukis and the Illinois State Redbirds come into this game with very similar records but the road team is actually favored by 1 1/2. I think at home though, the Salukis of SIU can get the win. They are just 1-5 in conference, but they did win their last home game over Indiana State. The Redbirds have also struggled in the Missouri Valley Conference going 0-6. The Salukis at home get my pick, but neither team is all that confidence-inspiring. Confidence Meter: 2

9:00- Vancouver Canucks: The Canucks dropped their opener last night and will look to bounce back as they welcome Edmonton to town tonight. Vancouver is usually very good at home and against a young Oilers team I think they’ll be able to get in the win column tonight. Confidence Meter: 4

9:45- Jo-Wilifried Tsonga: Tsonga is down in the head-to-head 4-3 but is ranked slightly higher than his countryman, Richard Gasquet as they come into this fourth-round match. Tsonga has taken two of three on hard court and won their only previous matchup in the Australian Open. Tsonga has been cruising and is yet to drop a set down under needing only one tie-breaker. Gasquet dropped a set and neede a tie-breaker in his last match against Ivan Dodig. Since he’s in slightly better form, more highly ranked, and is better on hard surface, my pick is Tsonga. Confidence Meter: 5

10:00- Chicago Blackhawks: The Blackhawks and Coyotes had similar records last season but started the season differently last night. The Blackhawks were convincing in their 5-2 win over the reigning champs in LA while the Coyotes dropped their opener in Dallas. Since the game is in the desert, I’m not super-confident, but I’ll take the team in the better form. Confidence Meter: 3
