ESPN Streak for the Cash Breakdown and Picks-January 22

One of the better picks tonight in ESPN Streak for the Cash is the Chicago Blackhawks. In this photo, left wing Viktor Stalberg (25) tries to shoot on Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith (41) during the first period at Jobing.com Arena. Photo by Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

This Tuesday is another day full of options for Streak for the Cash players. Today’s board offers more Africa Cup of Nations Soccer this morning and early afternoon with some cup action from Italy, France, and England mixed in. Tonight there’s plenty of college hoops and NBA picks along with the NHL and Aussie open picks.

As one of my readers on twitter @alltraclover pointed out, having NHL back is “Good as a sports fan, but bad as a SFTC player. Shootout reds are back!” Here’s hoping we can avoid those and all other reds as we navigate a deep and diverse board today. Here’s my favorites:

1/22 Streak Picks

10:00- Ivory Coast to win by 2The Ivory Coast is one of the favorites in the cup since they’re loaded offensively. Still, winning by multiple goals is always a tricky prop unless there’s a large talent gap between the teams. From what I’ve read, that gap exists between them and Togo who aren’t expected to do much in Cup play, but its early in the tournament so overall form is still a question mark. Confidence Meter: 3

1:00- Tunisia Win/Draw: The odds are about even for each side to win so getting the draw Tunisia is a solid pick. Both these teams have the misfortune of playing in the Ivory Coast’s group so they can’t afford a loss here making a draw a good possibility. Confidence Meter: 5

2:45- Bradford City: Bradford is up 3-1 on Aston Villa on aggregate and Villa’s been a mess as of late. I don’t see them mounting the comeback they’d need to move on in this one. Bradford City will be all in to move on while Aston Villa has plenty of other concerns including avoiding relegation from the EPL. Confidence Meter: 4

7:03- Wisconsin Badgers: Michigan State visits the Badgers of Wisconsin after getting a big win at home over then-#11 Ohio State to improve to 5-1 in conference. Wisconsin had been undefeated in conference play until losing at Iowa their last time out. Vegas has Wisconsin as 5 1/2 points favorites at home and its hard to pick against them since they’ve already knocked off then #12 Illinois at home by 23 and won at the n #2 Indiana before slipping up in Iowa City. Bo Ryan will have his team ready to bounce back and get the green, so don’t get thrown off by the number in front of MSU’s name. If this game was at Michigan State, I’d take them but in the Big 10 home field is huge and this one’s at Wisconsin. Confidence Meter: 4

7:05- Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning won their first game but tripped up on the road as they took on the New York Islanders yesterday afternoon. They’ll be in their third game as they take on their Southeast Division foe for the first of their five meetings this season. Carolina is trying to get things going after a tough season last year and a bad opener as they fell 5-1 to Florida. Tampa has more scoring options and is a better team overall, so I’ll take them even on back-to-back days because I don’t have any confidence in Carolina. Confidence Meter: 3

7:35- Detroit Pistons: The Pistons and Magic both struggle on the road while Detroit has developed into a solid team at The Palace. This game will take place in Detroit where the Pistons are 11-11 and beat Boston badly on Sunday. The Magic have dropped their last two games and have only been able to get a pair of wins in their last 15 games. The Pistons have dropped the first two games in the season series, but should be able to get one back since they’re in much better form coming into this one especially at home. Confidence Meter: 6

7:35- New Jersey Devils: Despite what the early streak pickers are trending towards, the Devils are favored slightly at home according to most sports books. They’ll be at home for this one as they host the Flyers who are still struggling to get their first win of the season. Phily has lost their first two games while only scoring three goals total. New Jersey already got their first win as they beat the Islanders 2-1. I expect another low-scoring game but I think New Jersey gets the win. Confidence Meter: 5

8:03- Kansas Jayhawks: The Jayhawks are just 3.5 point favorites as they head to Manhattan, Kansas to take on their rival K-State. Kansas has won 15 in a row and are 4-0 in the Big 12 as they look to improve their already steller 22-2 record in Bramlage Coliseum, the home of K-State. Kansas beat them twice last season including an overtime game in Manhattan. While I don’t think it’s a lock, I do think the Jayhawks get the win in what should be a great game. Confidence Meter: 7

8:05- Minnesota Wild: The Wild have started 2-0 and look for their third home win in a row tonight as they welcome the Nashville Predators. The Preds have dropped a pair of games in shootouts to open their season with losses to Columbus and St. Louis. The Wild should have Niklas Backstrom back between the pipes and with new acquisitions Zach Parise and Ryan Suterplaying well I think they’re good for the green in this one. Confidence Meter: 4

8:30- 16 Games or Fewer: This Aussie open prop is for games between Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens. In their only previous meeting which took place earlier this season it took Serena 19 games to deal with the teenager. I’m still going under here though due to Serena’s domination so far in this tournament. Williams has won all her previous in 16 or fewer and rolled Maria Kirilenko in 14 in her last match. The only person to take Serena to 17 or more in either of her two tournaments in Australia was Stephens. I think Williams keeps on rolling here as she moves into the semi’s. Confidence Meter: 5

8:35- Chicago Blackhawks: The St. Louis Blues needed a shootout to get the win last night over Tampa and now they head to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks who opened with a pair of impressive wins on the road. The ‘Hawks went on the road and beat the Kings and the Coyotes and could be catching the Blues at a good time on the second half of back-to-back games. Confidence Meter: 6

9:05- Kentucky Wildcats: The Wildcats demolished Auburn their last time out and could be starting to gel as a unit. UK has tons of talent but remains wildly inconsistent. Tonight they head to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama who edged Texas A&M in their last home game. ‘Bama has been solid but doesn’t have the level of top talent the ‘Cats have. If UK plays like they can, their ceiling is much higher, but Alabama is much more consistent. This is far from a lock, but I think Coach Cal has these guys headed in the right direction. Confidence Meter: 4

9:05- BC Win or Single-Digit Loss: The Eagles are 9.5 point underdogs as they go to Maryland. Maryland had a signature win last week over then-#14 NC State but has struggled to a 2-3 start to ACC play losing by 10 to UNC on Sunday. BC has also struggled and is just 1-3 in conference play but has lost those games by very narrow margins. They fell by just one in their last game against Miami, lost by three at Wake Forest, and played well losing by five to NC State at home. The Terps will probably win this game, but I don’t expect them to cover. BC is a young team and is growing up fast as they battle their way through the ACC. Confidence Meter: 7

9:05- Colorado Avalanche: The LA Kings and Colorado Avalanche look to avoid 0-2 starts as they face off tonight in Denver. The Kings are still without one of their few offensive weapons with Anze Kopitar out with a knee injury. The main reason LA won the Stanley Cup was the goaltending of Jonathan Quick, but he gave up five goals in the opener and isn’t in the form that we saw him in at the end of last year. The Avs took all four games against the Kings last year and only one even made it to shootout. Confidence Meter: 3

10:05- Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers and San Jose Sharks both won their openers, and Edmonton is an exciting young team I expect to get to the playoffs this season after a tough season last year. The Oilers went on the road to Vancouver and got a nice win to open the season and can build on it by upsetting the team that had the most points in the Western Conference. Confidence Meter: 2 1/2

10:35- Oklahoma City Thunder: In what should be a great game the top two teams in the NBA (according to many) face off at the Staples Center. Oklahoma City comes in with a 32-9 record as they face the LA Clippers who come in 32-10. In an unusual twist with those records, both are coming off tough losses on the road. OKC lost at Denver on Sunday and LA lost at Golden State last night. I expect this to be a super-close, super-competitive game and would stay away from picking it if at all possible. It will be a great game to watch, so to have a pick on the board for it I’ll go with a red-hot Kevin Durant and the Thunder with an extra day of rest to go in and get a win over the Clippers. Confidence Meter: 2
