ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis, January 25

One of the best picks on ESPN’s Streak for the Cash tonight is the New Orleans Hornets and Roger Mason Jr. as they look to get another win over the Houston Rockets and Chandler Parsons (25). Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Friday’s Streak for the Cash board is another full one with soccer and a golf prop early and a hockey and NBA-heavy board tonight with college hoops mixed in. With under a week to go, it’s time to be agressive and get in as many picks as you can before things reset next Friday. Here’s the picks I like the most coming into today:

Streak Picks 1/25

10:00- Zambia win or Draw: Zambia won the last Africa Cup of Nations but opened with a draw against Ethiopia. They made it undefeated through to 2012 Nations Cup, and their last loss was to Nigeria back in 2010. Nigeria took that one on PK’s, but since this is in group stage a tie will result in a draw and green for Zambia. A loss would be catastrophic for either side, so a draw seems a probable result. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

1:00- Burkina Faso win: Burkina Faso stole a draw against Nigeria and have to like their changes of moving on if they can get a win in this match. Ethiopia held on against a tough Zambian attack but did lose their goalie to a straight red. The backups are fairly inexperienced, and with a lack of scoring options for the Ethiopians that could be disastrous. Burkina Faso is a solid team and could make some noise if they are able to get the win here. Confidence Meter: 3

1:30- Brandt Snedeker: Sneds isn’t the big name that Phil Mickelson is, but he has to give the tie here since he is the defending champion and tied for the lead with a -7 in round one. That brought him to an incredible 52 shots under par in his career at Torrey Pines. Meanwhile in the same group, Phil shot even-par in round 1 and hasn’t shown great form yet this season, so Snedeker for the win is about as good a golf pick as you can get. Confidence Meter: 7

7:00- New Jersey Devils: The Caps are in trouble having dropped their first three games this year as they head into New Jersey. Washington fell again last night, this time to the Canadiens and have give up an average of five goals per game. In contrast, The Devils have giving up 0.5 goals per game behind a red-hot 40-year old goalie Martin Brodeur. New Jersey is at home and have had more rest since their last game so I think they’ll take this one easily to improve to 3-0. Confidence Meter: 6

7:00- Loyola Greyhounds: Loyola of Maryland isn’t a great team but they are favored by 2.5 as they go on the road to take on Manhattan. The reason they’re the smart pick here is that the Manhattan Jaspers have started the year just 5-13. The Jaspers rank 329th in the country in scoring and have lost four of five and eight of 10. L-MD is 6-2 in the MAAC and have been able to win their last two including a nice road win over Fairfield. Confidence Meter: 5

7:30- Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres return home for the second half of their back-to-back home-and-home with Carolina tonight. Carolina got the win 6-3 last night but Buffalo didn’t start their #1 goalie Ryan Miller. Miller should be back between the pipes tonight and I think Buffalo will return to their winnings ways. Confidence Meter: 3

8:00- New Orelans Hornets: The Hornets are actually favored despite streakers flocking to take the Houston Rockets. The Hornets beat the Rockets in New Orleans where this game is 16 days ago 88-79 and have won seven of ten overall. Houston hasn’t been faring so well as the loss in the Big Easy has started a slide in which they dropped eight of nine with their only win coming over lowly Charlotte. Houston’s defense has been struggling and they’re just 8-14 on the road all year, so go with the home favorite in better form. Confidence Meter: 4

8:00- Pittsburgh Penguins: The Pens head to Winnipeg after losing at home to Toronto. They were able to win their two road games earlier this season and will hope to get things going as they head north of the border to take on the Jets. The Jets have struggled at home lately losing their last five straight on their home ice dating back to last season. The Penguins have dominated the series recently winning their last three meetings with a composite score of 20-10. Confidence Meter: 5

10:00- Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks have started with a pair of wins including thumping the Canucks 7-3 in Vancouver to open the season. Anaheim followed that win with another win as they edged Calgary 5-4 on Monday. Vancouver finally got  their first win Wednesday also over Calgary. Vancouver isn’t in good form so far this season while Anaheim has started out playing well. Look for both those trends to continue as these sides face-off tonight in Anaheim. Confidence Meter: 3

10:35- Utah Jazz: The Jazz are playing well as they head to LA to face the struggling Lakers. LA has lost four in a row and 10 of their last 12 as they’ve stumbled to 17-25. On top of that, they lost Dwight Howard in their last game and he may not be available for this one. Utah has been trending the other way having won four in a row and eight of ten. Their wins have been mostly at home, but they have beaten the Lakers twice this season including once at the Staples Center. The Lakers are always dangerous with Kobe who can go off at any point, but the Jazz are the hotter team and are just playing better at this point. Confidence Meter: 4
