ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis-January 31

In the best pick of the last day of the month in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash, the Boston Bruins and goaltender Tuukka Rask (40) will try to stop the Sabres in an Northeast Division showdown. It’s the last day of January which means streaks are all reset tonight on ESPN Streak for the Cash. Thankfully, there’s plenty of options on today’s slate to get yourself in the green in a hurry to finish the month strong. The PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open gives us a couple props this morning with some soccer before we get to the hockey-heavy schedule tonight. Here’s the picks I’m looking at today:

1/31 Streak Picks

Feb 3, 2012; Scottsdale, AZ, USA; Jason Dufner sets up on the 10th tee during the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course. Mandatory Credit: Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports

10:06- Jason Dufner: Dufner has been red hot as he faces Phil in this nine-hole prop. Phil is coming off a t51 last week at Torrey Pines and a t37 in the Humana Challenge the week before. Dufner on the other hand has top 20′s in his last eight events. He started this season with an un-inspiring t18 in the limited field Kapalua event but followed that up with a pair of t9’s on the European Tour. He’s got a great history at this event including a solo second in 2010 and a t8 last year. Confidence Meter: 6

2:25- Martin Kaymer or tie: Kaymer comes across the pond for his first tournament on the PGA Tour and in this prop gets the tie as he takes on Keegan Bradley. He’s been playing very well in Europe while Keegan is coming off a missed cut and a t49 so far this season on the PGA Tour. This is a close one, but I’ll go with the German to get at least a tie. Confidence Meter: 3

4:00- Atletico Madrid win: Madrid is at home where they are 11-0-0. Any further discussion seems unnecessary for this pick. Confidence Meter: 6

7:00- Boston Bruins: The Bruins come home as they take on Sabres at the TD Garden tonight. Boston is 5-0-1 in their first six games and are always good at home where they’re 4-0-0. Buffalo is just 1-2-0 on the road and haven’t won in their last four games after starting 2-0. Look for the Bruins to continue their strong start at home in the best pick of the night. Confidence Meter: 7

Jan 24, 2013; Toronto, ON, Canada; Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Phil Kessel (81) skates with the puck as New York Islanders center Casey Cizikas (53) watches at the Air Canada Centre. The Islanders beat the Maple Leafs 7-4. Mandatory Credit: Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

7:00- Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs will be looking for their first home points as they host the struggling Capitals tonight at the Air Canada Centre. Washington lost Tuesday at Ottawa to fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 on the road. Toronto hasn’t been playing great, but Washington’s defense has struggled enough that I think they’re still the pick here. Confidence Meter: 4

7:00- New York Rangers: The Rangers get the Penguins at Madison Square Garden tonight looking for their fourth win in their last five games and moving to 4-1-0 at home. Pittsburgh started the season well, but is trending the other way losing three of four while being outscored 14-7. The Rangers are playing better anda are at home, so they’re the better pick. However, Pittsburgh definitely has the ability to get the win here if they play their best game, which is why I like the other options a bit better.    Confidence Meter: 3

7:00- St. Louis Blues: The Blues are off to one of the best starts in the league as they head to Columbus to face off against the Blue Jackets. Columbus has dropped five of six since winning their opener but was able to get a win at home on Monday as they edged Dallas 2-1. St. Louis will provide a much stiffer test coming in having won three in a row to get to 5-1-0 with their only loss coming on the road at Chicago. The Blues are in the top six teams in the NHL in Goals per Game and least goals against which makes them a good pick as they go on the road to face Columbus in their first game since Sunday. Confidence Meter: 6

7:03- Connecticut Huskies: Providence and UConn mean in a game that Vegas has within a point or even as a straight-up pick’em. UConn was able to break a two-game lostin streak their last time out as they got past Rutgers by 12 at home. They’re just 1-2 in true road games but did get a nice win at Notre Dame three weeks ago in their lone road win. The Huskies won’t have an easy time of it at the Dunkin Donuts Center even though the Friars are only 2-6 in conference. Providence has dropped three of four but were the last team to knock of Villanova getting a 69-66 win on January 19. Their last three home games have been decided by a total of 13 points, and I think this will be another close one with the Huskies guard play putting them over the top in the end. Confidence Meter: 5

8:02- Iowa by 15+: Taking Penn State on the road even plus 15 isn’t the way I’m going to end my month. I’d stay away from this pick under normal circumstances but by tomorrow we’ll all be back at zero, so why not have a pick active. The Hawkeyes have lost two in a row but are still 15-point favorites at home against the Nittany Lions. Iowa only lost by nine at OSU and only by three in overtime to Purdue, and before that they had won over Wisconsin and Northwestern. Penn State has been absolutely dreadful in conference going 0-8 in the Big Ten. On the road they’ve lost by 23 at Indiana, 18 at Purdue, and nine at Wisconsin. They were able to stay within 14 of OSU in their last game, but that was at home. This game’s on the road so I don’t think they’ll be able to stay within shouting distance of the Hawkeyes. Confidence Meter: 3
