ESPN Streak for the Cash Picks and Analysis-February 2

The Florida Gators are one of the many Streak for the Cash Picks you can find here on this full day of sports from college hoops, the NBA, NHL, and even some Africa Cup Soccer. In this photo from January 30,  Florida Gators forward Will Yeguete (15) reacts with guard Michael Frazier II (20) after Frazier made a three pointer against the South Carolina Gamecocks during the second half at the Stephen C. O

It’s only a day into the new month and already we’ve had some classically close matchups. A couple of the apparent “gimme” picks paid off with Tampa Bay, the Jazz, the Lakers, and No 25+points in the third quarter all delivering green to the 90+% of streakers who picked the. On the other hand, there were some surprises as many streakers saw red with the Blackhawks, Pacers, and Hurricanes pulling the upsets.

There’s sure to be more upsets today in a Saturday full of streak picks from college basketball, African soccer, the PGA Tour, the NHL, the NBA, and UFC 156. Don’t forget about the annual rodent-watch this morning too. Here’s the picks I’m keeping a close eye on for my entry today:

Streak Picks for 2/2/13

7:20- Yes–Six More Weeks of Winter: This is an annual tradition on Streak for the Cash and historically it’s over 80% yes. Normally I’d say “You never know for sure” and “that’s why the play the game,” but since this isn’t really a game I’ll refrain from that and just say take the green in eight-out-of-ten result. Confidence Meter: 6

11:00- Cincinnati Bearcats: The Bearcats are favored as they visit Seton Hall by 5 1/2. The Pirates are coming off losses in six of their last seven including home losses to Louisville and Providence. Cincinnati has been up-and-down this year but has been able to win four of five with their only loss coming by two at Syracuse. Cincinnati should be able to go on the road and get the win at the Prudential Center. Confidence Meter: 7

12:00- Syracuse Orange: This is a pick many will flock too, but don’t be too confident. I think the Orange will get the win, but they’re actually underdogs as they visit Pittsburgh despite their #6 ranking. Pittsburgh is favored by three coming off a three-point loss on the road at Louisville. Syracuse has been in a bunch of close games recently and is coming off a tough loss at Villanova. Syracuse has the talent to win, and the Panthers will be smelling upset although they have lost two of four in-conference home games. Confidence Meter: 3

12:50-65 or Fewer: Phil is absolutely on fire shooting a 60 and 65 in the first two rounds at the Waste Management Phoenix Open to take a four stroke lead. I doubt he’ll fire another 60, but he dominates on this course and is playing light’s out golf this week. He would have been even further ahead if it wasn’t for a double-bogey on his final hole yesterday. I think he’ll continue to go low and make Sunday a “victory lap.” Confidence Meter: 4

1:00- Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins are still looking for their first home points of the season as they host the Devils this afternoon. Pittsburgh has played well on the road and will be anxious to silence the chatter about their inability to win at home. The Devils are playing well to start the season at 3-0-3 but have had issued with penalty killing recently having lost their last three games all in overtime or shootout. Pittsburgh is coming off a nice win over the Rangers in New York, and they ended last seson on a 21-3 run at home so I don’t think their home futility will continue today. Confidence Meter: 5

1:30-Mali win or Draw: Mali has played three solid games coming out of group play with a 1-1-1 record. Their only loss was to a strong Ghana team 1-0. South Africa has a slightly better record at 1-2-0 but played less formidable competition. South Africa is the host of the Africa Cup, but I think Mali can hold them to a draw in this one. Confidence Meter: 4

2:00- Notre Dame winning Margin: Depaul is a woeful 1-6 in Big East play but the Blue Demons have played close games at home. In their ten home games, the largest margin of loss was nine against St. John’s. They’ve played within five of Seton Hall and Cincinnati and will look to keep it close against the Fighting Irish in this afternoon’s game. On the other side, Notre Dame has won three of four, but none of those wins were by more than eight which was their largest winning margin on the road as well. In their last game Notre Dame edged Villanova, while in their last game DePaul forced overtime on the road before ultimately falling to St. John’s. In that game, the Blue Demons hit six threes in their last game but average under five per game. The Irish are favored by six and I think they’ll be able to win and cover ultimately winning by about 10. If the Demons hit more three’s I’d go with them, but they aren’t a team that hits three-point shots. Confidence Meter: 5

2:05- Duke winning Margin or Tie: Duke goes south to Florida State where they’re favored by six and a half. Florida State averages 6.5 three’s a game as well so the prop is set up very well. Duke has struggled in true road games, but Florida State has struggled all seasonalthough they have won their last two home games over Clemson and Maryland. The Seminoles have been routed though, when they’ve played top-level teams losing by 24 at Miami, 20 at Virginia, and 25 against Florida at home. Duke may not cruise by that many, but I think they’ll win by ten or so and cover the FSU three’s. Confidence Meter: 4

4:00- Arkansas Razorbacks: The Razorbacks are 6. favorites at home as they host the Tennessee Volunteers in this SEC matchup. Arkansas has hasn’t won  on the road in conference play, but they haven’t lost at home. They played well at Alabama before losing by three in their last game. Tennessee also has been playing well at home winning three of their last four, but all those games were at home. They’ve gone 0-5 in true road games this year including losses at Ole Miss, UK, and Alabama in conference. This game will probably be close and if the game was in Knoxville I’d take the Vols. It’s not though so I’ll go with the home ‘Hogs to get the win. Confidence Meter: 6

5:00- Akron Zips: The Zips face off with the Ohio Bobcats today in a matchup of unbeaten MAC programs. Ohio has played one less game since their meeting with Eastern Michigan was canceled due to an armed fugitive in the area. Both teams are playing well and in close games lately, but Akron at home is a 5 1/2 point favoritea nd I think they should be able to get the win. Ohio really struggles to get rebounds at times which could ultimately be their undoing in this one. Confidence Meter: 5

6:00- Oklahoma Sooners: The Sooners host the #18 K-State Wildcats as they look to build on a successful road trip to Baylor as they return to Norman. Oklahoma and Kansas State are both 5-2 in conference, and K-State won in Manhattan by nine when the two sides met two weeks ago. However, the Wildcats have a tough schedule with three of their next four on the road. They’ve lost two of their three games since beating Oklahoma starts that stretch for them  and has won all their in-conference games at home defeating Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State with relative ease. They’ll have a tougher time with K-State, but I think they can stil get the win at home since ranked teams have gone down on the road in-conference all season. Confidence Meter: 4

7:00- Boston Bruins: The Bruins will be looking to bounce back after a rough showing at home where they allowed Buffalo to beat them up and score a total of seven goals. Boston looks to erase those memories as they head to Toronto tonight to take on the Maple Leafs who they have beaten the last six times the teams have met. Toronto haw won their last two games but is only 1-2-0 at home. Confidence Meter: 6

7:00- Detroit Red Wings: The Wings  just beat St. Louis who was on a roll for their first consecutive wins of the season. They’ll look to make in three as they travel to Columbus for the second time already this year. They won in a shootout on January 21, but Columbus has struggled more recently meaning I think the Wings won’t need extra time to beat the Blue Jackets tonight. Columbus won their opener in shootout but has lost six of seven since including a 4-1 loss to St. Louis in their last game on Thursday. Confidence Meter: 5

7:05- Florida wins by 15+ Points: Florida is actually favored in this game by 17 1/2 points so you get 2 1/2 for free from the Streak board in this one. Ole Miss is ranked #16 as they head to Gainesville, but noone has been able to stay anywhere close to the Gators at home. Florida has dominated the SEC thumping then-#17 Mizzou by 21 when they played at Florida two weeks ago. Wisconsin was ranked 22 when they felt the chomp by 18 at the beginning of the year. Florida’s two losses both came away from home, and there doesn’t seem to be much chance of them losing this one. Ole Miss just lost at home to Kentucky by 13 and were exposed as being perhaps a bit overrated. They have struggled on the road winning by just two at Auburn  and needing overtime to get past Vandy on the road. I think Florida will again show their SEC rivals who the conference goes through in another dominating win in Gainesville. Confidence Meter: 6

8:00- Iowa State Cyclones: Baylor and Iowa State match up both looking to bounce back from tough losses. Baylor fell at home to Oklahoma when a last-gasp three rimmed out, and Iowa State dropped a two-point game in Stillwater to Oklahoma State on a late bucket from the Cowboys’ Marcus Smart. Iowa State fell to 4-3 in the conference but is solid at home in Ames where this game will be played today. On the season, they have six losses but five have been true-road games and one on a neutral court. Baylor has been inconsistent this year but has struggled on the road losing at Kansas and Gonzaga although they did win at then-#8 Kentucky. Baylor is inconsistent so it’s hard to be too confident in what to expect from them on any given night, but I’ll go with the Cyclones to protect their home court like they have all year. Confidence Meter: 5

8:00- New Orleans Hornets: The Timberwolves host the Hornets in a matchup of two struggling teams. New Orleans has lost five of six, but Minnesota has been even worse losing 11 of 12 and six in a row. The Lakers thumped them at home last night while New Orleans continued its road trip with a loss in Denver. The two teams have split their first two meetings of the year both in the Big easy, but New Orleans won their last matchup by 12 on January 11. Eric Gordon is back now for the Hornets and I think they are the better team at this point with Minnesota sliding into the abyss. Confidence Meter: 4

9:00- Michigan Wolverines: The Wolverines face an incredibly tough test as they travel to Bloomington to take on now-#3 and former-#1 Indiana. This is definitely the matchup of the day, and an almost impossible one to pick. The Hoosiers are four point favorites since it’s at their building. The reason I’m going against the favorites is the track record of both teams. Michigan has proven they can go on the road against a tough team and win by beating Minnesota when they were red hot, and Indiana has proven less-than-invincible at Assembly Hall where they’ve lost to Wisconsin and survived scares from Michigan State and Minnesota. I’d stay away with my streak, but this is a game you won’t want to miss. Confidence Meter: 2

10:00- Portland Trail Blazers: The Utah Jazz won last night against the Blazers, and the two teams meet again tonight but this time they’ll be in Portland. The Blazers are 16-8 at home while the Jazz are just 9-16 away from Salk Lake City. Both teams are really good at home and struggle on the road so a home-and-home split would make perfect sense. Confidence Meter: 4

10:30- San Jose Sharks: The Sharks are 7-0-0 as they finish their six-game homestand against the Nashville Predators. The Preds rank last in the NHL in goals per game but did manage to knock off the defending champs in a shootout on Thursday. I don’t think they’ll be able to skate with the Sharks though who rank 2nd in goals per game and 2nd in least goals allowed. They’ve been dominant and will look to continue their rampage tonight. Confidence Meter: 7

11:05- Gonzaga wins by 15+: The Zags take on San Diego in the last non-MMA pick of the day. Gonzaga is rolling having won three in a row since losing at Butler. They’ve won all three confortably and in-conference only Saint Mary’s has been able to stay close. Their opponent in this one is the San Diego Toreros who have lost three in a row by big margins to BYU (17), St. Mary’s (33), and Santa Clara (14). Gonzaga is favored in this one by 14 1/2 points and I think they’ll cover and close the day for me with a green. Confidence Meter: 6
