ESPN Streak for the Cash February 10 Picks and Analysis

In today’s Streak for the Cash picks, one of the most intriguing questions is, “Can the Duke Blue Devils be the only top-5 team to avoid upset to claim the number 1 spot or will the upset bug strike Boston next?” In this photo guard Rasheed Sulaimon (14) and guard Quinn Cook (2) and forward Mason Plumlee (5) react near the end of their game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack.. If you survived yesterday with a streak fully in tact, congratulations! There were upsets, surprises, and plenty of red all over the board yesterday. Today’s Streak for the Cash schedule poses some more challenging picks with options from soccer, hockey, basketball, and even golf. There’s plenty of options, but finding the green could once again prove to be elusive. Here’s the picks I’m watching today:

2/10 Streak Picks

11:00-Manchester United win: Man U sits firmly atop the EPL table again this season with a remarkable 20-2-3 record overall and an 11-0-1 home record. Today they welcome in Everton who is 10-12-3 on the season and 4-6-2 on the road. Man U has won outright six of their last seven EPL matches while Everton hasn’t lost in five games but has picked up three draws in that span. In the season opener for both teams back on August 20, Everton beat Manchester United 1-0 but Man U has played far better since that loss. I think they’ll be out for revenge and take it to Everton early getting yet another win at Old Trafford. Confidence Meter: 6

12:30- Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings host the defending champion LA Kings over on NBC this afternoon. The champs regular season issues from last year have plagued them again this season especiaaly on the offensive end. LA is averaging barely over two goals a game ranking them 25th in the League. This will be the fourth game in their five-game road trip where they’re 1-2 so far getting beaten soundly at Anaheim and Nashville  while salvaging a win at Columbus. Detroit, meanwhile, has won their last two games avenging their season-opening loss at St. Louis on Thursday and winning yesterday against the Oilers. Even though they’re in a back-to-back, Detroit should be ok since both were home games where they historically have an incredible advantage. So far this year, they’re 4-2-0. Confidence Meter: 5

1:00- Maryland: Welcome to the ACC, where everyone wins at home and no on can win on the road. Maryland is 14-1 at home and favored by 1.5 as they host Virginia who has struggled to a 2-4 road record. The Cavaliers lost their last road game at Georgia Tech and also lost at Wake Forest and Clemson-both teams that are currently below Maryland in the ACC standings.  The Terps only home loss of the season was to Florida State on January 9 and their most impressive home win came over then-#14 NC State. In college hoops as we saw yesterday, home court means a lot, so since this is a fairly even matchup I’ll take the Turtles at the Comcast Center. Confidence Meter: 4

1:00- Nigeria: The Nigerians are heavily favored to win as they take on upstart Burkina Faso. They’ve looked good all tournament and should be able to win the championship if they continue playing in current form. They should also be more rested since Burkina Faso played overtime and had a shootout while Nigeria won their semifinal in regulation. Confidence Meter: 6

3:05- Syracuse by 15+: The Orange are 14 point favorites as they host St. John’s in the Carrier Dome this afternoon. They beat Notre Dame last Monday by 16 and should be well-rested after a nice layoff. At home, Syracuse has been excellent, as usual, with a 14-0 record. It would be their 37th home victory in a row. St. John’s will look to stop the ‘Cuse from getting that win coming off a nice home win over UConn on Tuesday. They’ve struggled  against quality opponents on the road but did upset then-#14 Cincinnati at the beginning of Big East play. Since Syracuse is at home, I think they’ll get this win since they seemed to discover some answers to their losses in their game against ND. Confidence Meter: (just hate giving that many points)

6:00- Portland Trail Blazers: The Blazers have struggled on the road but are taking on the injury-ravaged Orlando Magic in one of tonight’s games. Orlando has lost their last 12 games, but did get Aaron Afflalo back from injury in their loss at Cleveland on Friday. The Blazers also lost on Friday dropping both parts of their Texas trip to Dallas and Houston. The Blazers are just 1-6 away from home in their last seven but did manage to beat the Magic at home in the team’s first meeting. Portland comes in as three-point favorites against the Magic and I think they’ll be able to overcome their road woes to extend Orlando’s misery another game. Confidence Meter: 5

6:00- Toronto Raptors: Toronto has been playing well since acquiring Rudy Gay and will take on the New Orleans Hornets north of the border this afternoon. Toronto snapped the Pacers home winning streak on Friday and will try to start their own home winning streak against the Hornets who have won their last two. Greivis Vasquez has been ballin’ for the Hornets, but I still think they won’t be able to avenge their home-loss to Toronto earlier this season. The Raps are on the rise just like the Hornets so this game will be worth watching despite the lackluster records. Confidence Meter: 7

6:05- Duke Winning Margin: With all the carnage atop the top 25 this week, Duke can move back into the #1 slot with a win on Sunday. They’ve played better since their big loss at Miami knocking off Maryland and NC State at home and FSU and Wake on the road. BC is just 2-7 in ACC play and is winless against ranked opponents in three tries this season. Miami blew them out earlier this week by 22 and UNC beat them by 12 in the middle of last week. Duke should be able to win this comfortably enough to cover the FT made in this prop. The Blue Devils are favored by 13. Confidence Meter: 6

8:00- Nashville Predators: This would be an upset; I get it. Chicago is red-hot winning nine of 11 to start the season. The Predators played last night in Minnesota and lost mainly because their offense continues to struggle. Right now, the Preds average 2.0 goals per game ranking them 29th in the league while Chicago is scoring 3.5 per game which is good enough for second. I’m taking the upset here because the Predators defense has been exceptional allowing just five goals in five games and they’ll get Pekka Rinne back after he rested last night in Minnesota. Rinne has won four starts in a row with a 0.72 GAA. I’ll take the home team with the great defense over the road team that scores in bunches amd hasn’t lost in regulation. Actually, I’ll probably just stay away from this pick, but don’t mindlessly just go Blackhawks. Confidence Meter: 2 1/2

9:00- Colorado Buffaloes: If the home team always gets a boost, when can that make the deciding difference and when is the road team better enough to win regardless? Neither of these teams is great, but is Colorado enough of a margin better than Oregon State to get the win in Corvallis? I think so, and Vegas is no help since this is a pick ‘em game. Colorado has won four of their last five including a big win in Eugene against Oregon earlier this week. They also won in-conference at Washington State. Oregon State hasn’t fared well at all in Pac-12 play with a 2-8 record. Their two wins came at home against Washington and in their last game at home over Utah. They won’t be pushovers, but I do have confidence that Colorado can get the win even though they’re on the road. Confidence Meter: 4

10:05- USC: USC is favored as they host the Washington Huskies in the Pac-12 nightcap tonight. Washington and USC have identical 5-5 in-conference records but Washington has lost five of their last six including a loss at UCLA on Thursday. On the other hand, USC followed up a win over UCLA by beating Washington State by four in their last game. Based on homecourt advantage and recent play, I’ll take the Trojans to get their third win in a row and take the first of two games between these division rivals this season. Confidence Meter: 5
