ESPN Streak for the Cash February 13 Picks and Analysis

In one of tonight’s Streak for the Cash picks, the Duke Blue Devils will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Is Duke elite enough to beat their hated rival by double digits? I think so-find out why and the rest of my picks below. It’s Wednesday the 13th as we near the half-way point of this short month on ESPN’s Streak for the Cash. Today also marks the return of the KHL in our morning pick followed by a great game from UEFA Champions League soccer this afternoon. Tonight, Rivalry week continues in college hoops along with a full slate of NBA games and a few NHL matchups sprinkles in as well. Here’s the picks I’ll be paying the most attention to today:

2/13 Streak Picks

11:00- CSKA Moscow: CSKA is road favorites as they take on Donbass who is trying to get into the KHL Postseason. Don’t worry too much about Moscow being on the road since they’ve been dominant away from home. CSKA also won the earlier match this season. Confidence Meter: 3

2:45- Real Madrid: Madrid is one of the best teams in the world and since they’re at home I’ll take them to get a goal and beat ManU. As if there needed to be more motivation to the knockout stage of the Champions League, it’s also Cristiano Ronaldo’s former teammates coming to his new club’s home. This will most likely be a high scoring game due to the offensive talent on both sides and the fact that 31 goals have been scored in these team’s last eight encounters in European play. Real won in 2000 and 2003 and are favored at home. I think that at Bernabeu Real is just too tough for United even though they’ve dominated the EPL this season. Confidence Meter: 5

7:03- Syracuse Orange: The Orange are four point favorite on the road at UConn but with James Southerland back from his eligibility issues. Southerland returned for the Orange as they cruised past St. John’s who was coming off a win over this same UConn team that’s next up for the ‘Cuse. The Huskies bounced back from that loss to get a win on the road at Seton Hall. They’ve been playing the lesser teams in the Big East close needing overtime to dispatch USF and Providence, so when they meet the top team-Syracuse-I think they’ll have a hard time keeping up. The Orange with Southerland are one of the best teams in the country, so I’m pretty confident with this pick even though it’s a rivlary game where anything can happen. Confidence Meter: 7

7:03- Shabazz Napier: Syracuse just has more options and Michael Carter-Williams isn’t sure to get the attempts he’d need to win this prop. MCW averages 12.4 points and 8.5 assists per game while Shabazz Napier averages 17.2 points and 4.3 assists. The reason I’ll take Napier is that he’s the main scorer for UConn while the Orange have James Southerland back now to complement Brandon Triche, CJ Fair, and Carter Williams. Napier and Ryan Boatright will be attempting to shoot over the top of the Orange zone defense early and often in this one.  Although I think ‘Cuse wins the game, I’ll take Napier in this prop. Confidence Meter: 4

7:04- Miami Winning Margin: They Hurricanes travel across the state to take on the Seminoles and the ‘Canes are favored by six. FSU averages 6.2 three’s per game but I expect Miami to win by double-digits. Miami is 10-0 in conference and are among the top teams in the country coming off a huge win over UNC. They did play NC State close on the road, but just ask Duke about how tough the Wolfpack are at home. Florida State hasn’t been that tough as they’ve stumbled to a 5-5 ACC record losing home games to Duke and UNC and on the road at Virginia, Wake Forest, and Miami. The Hurricanes won their previous matchup on January 27 by 14 and I think this game will be about the same margin of victory meaning they should have enough to overcome the 5-7 three’s from the ‘Noles. Confidence Meter: 6

7:05- Atlanta Hawks: Even though the Magic are getting healthy, I still think the Hawks are the better pick as they fly into Orlando for their third meeting with the Magic this season. The Hawks won first two meetings and have now won the last eight regular season meetings between these teams. The Hawks looked a little better their last time out as they knocked off the Mavs in Dallas on Monday. The Magic also won on Monday, but Orlando had lost 12 in a row before beating Portland. The Magic aren’t the pushovers they were at times over the last few weeks since their lineup was so injury-riddled, but I still think Atlanta is the smart pick here due to their dominance in the series. Confidence Meter: 5

Feb 11, 2013; Milwaukee, WI, USA; Washington Wizards center Nene (42) goes for a layup against Milwaukee Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova (7), forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (12) and center Samuel Dalembert (21) at the Bradley Center. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

7:35- Washington Wizards: The Wizards are starting to surge having won four in a row as they head into the break. They’ll head into The Palace to take on Detroit who has won 12 of the last 14 times these teams have met. Lots of teams have those kind of numbers against the woeful Wizards, but John Wall, Bradley Beal, and Nene are leading the charge for the revitalized Wizards. Detroit is solid at home, but they’ve been fading of late and lost at home by 19 at home to the Hornets. I think the Wizards will be able to get this win and carry their momentum into All-Star weekend. Confidence Meter: 4

9:05- Duke wins by Double Digits: The Blue Devils are favored by 11 at home against their rival Tar Heels. UNC has struggled in ACC play this year with just a 6-4 record. They lost by 26 at Miami their last time out and have also lost in-conference road games to NC State and even Virginia. The Heels have lost five of their nine true road games and three of those were by double-digits. Duke has had its own share of struggles as well, but they have been solid at home winning all 12 of their home games as well as their six neutral court games. Of their 12 home wins, 11 have been by double-digits with onely then-#4 Ohio State staying close. All their conference home games have been blowouts with NC State staying the closest, losing by just 13. I think Duke will crush the Heels in Cameron, and even though I hate to give the points I’ll roll with the Dukies. Confidence Meter: 6

9:05- Providence Friars: The Friars head to the Sun Dome to take on South Florida in this pick ‘em game. Providence is coming off a pair of nice wins at Villanova and at home against then-#17 Cincinnati a week ago. The USF Bulls also went on the road to Villanova, but they got wrecked by 28 points. That loss on Saturday was their sixth in a row and dropped them to 1-10 at the bottom of the Big East. Providence is playing better basketball right now and make a solid pick as they head to Tampa. Confidence Meter: 7

11:05- Oregon Ducks: The struggling Ducks are 1 1/2 point underdogs as they go into Washington. Oregon was able to snap their three-game slide as they beat Utah by nine on Saturday and will play Washington and Washington State on the road this weke. When the two teams met in Eugene back on January 26, Oregon pulled out the 81-76 win, but going on the road hasn’t been kind to the Ducks as they’ve lost to Stanford and Cal on their last two road-trips. Washington hasn’t been playing well either dropping six of their last seven although most have been in close games. Oregon seems to have righted the ship a bit, and I think they’ll have enough to extend the Huskies recent struggles. This will most likely be a close one, though, and I wouldn’t put a long streak on it despite the fact that the Ducks are ranked which usually brings streakers to that side of the pick. Confidence Meter: 4
