ESPN Streak for the Cash February 17 Picks and Analysis

In one of the better Streak for the Cash picks today, Evgeni Malkin leads the Pittsburgh Penguins into Buffalo to take on the Sabres. Check out what other picks there are on this NBA All-Star Sunday. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Sunday still manages to have plenty of Streak for the Cash options despite a break in the NBA schedule for the All-Star game, baseball still in early spring training, and the NFL on hiatus for the offseason. Stepping in to finn in the gap is EPL soccer, the NHL, and men’s and women’s college hoops. There’s a prop from the PGA’s Northern Trust Open, a Spanish Primera Division game, and some All-Star game props to round out the schedule.

After a moderately successful Saturday (at least for my most confidence picks), today I’m looking to keep my streak rolling into this new week, and these are the seven games I’m keeping an eye on today:

2/17 Streak Picks

10:00- Swansea City win or draw: The Swans head to  Anfield this morning to get the day started in Streak for the Cash as they take on Liverpool. ‘Pool and the Swans played to a scoreless draw in their earlier EPL season. Swansea has earned a draw or win in four of their last five road games in EPL play eight of their last nine overall league games. Liverpool hasn’t been faring as well with a pair of 2-0 losses in the last week at home to West Brom and on the road at Zenit St. Petersburg in Europa play. They have the second leg of their match with the Russians in just a few days, so I have no confidence that Liverpool will be able to get the full three points.  Confidence Meter: 5

12:30- Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins skate north to take on the Sabres who are coming off a big win over the Bruins on Friday night. The Pens won on Friday too at Winnipeg and have improved to 7-2-0 on the road this season. The Sabres had struggled before beating Boston and I don’t see them beating the Bruins and Penguins in back-to-back games. The Penguins have dominated the recent series and are the better team at this point, so I think they’ll get the win on the road here. Confidence Meter: 6

1:05- Wisconsin Bagders: The Badgers are four-point favorites at home as they host the higher-ranked Buckeyes, but in the Big Ten this season has proven to be all about homecourt. The Badgers lost their last game by five in overtime on the road at Minnesota but have won their last three home games including wins over then-#12 Minnesota and then-#3 Michigan. The Buckeyes were able to beat the Badgers in Columbus earlier this season by nine, but a home-and-home split would be par for the course among the top teams in the nation’s top conference. Confidence Meter: 3

2:00- Minnesota Golden Gophers: The Gophers have rebounded from a rough four-game slide by winning three of their last five including a three-point win at home in the bard over Iowa. The Hawkeyes followed that loss with a double-overtime loss in Wisconsin and a pair of wins over Northwestern and a two-point win on the road over hapless Penn State. Minnesota has the talent to get the win on the road in this game which has huge ramifications for both team’s tournament hopes. Andre Hollins came up huge in Minnesota’s earlier win over Iowa and was a big part of their latest win over Wisconsin as well. Confidence Meter: 4

6:00- Minnesota Wild: The Wild host Detroit as both teams try to gain traction in the middle of the Western Conference. Most of Minnesota’s struggles have been on the road where they’re just 1-4-1, but they’re actually 5-3-0 at home in the Xcel Energy Center. The Red Wings splits are similar with a 2-2-1 road record. Detroit has lost their last two including their most recent loss on Friday night at home to Anaheim. The Wild have also dropped their last two by a goal at Vancouver and at home in a shootout to Colorado. Since they’re at home, I’ll go with the Wild but neither team is that confidence-inspiring. Confidence Meter: 4

6:05- Any Other Result: The #3 Hurricanes put their unbeaten ACC record on the line as they travel to Clemson tonight. The ‘Canes are only 6 1/2 point favorites so be aware that you’re giving an extra 3 points in this pick if you do with double digits.  In their six in-conference road wins, only at Georgia Tech were they able to win by double digits. Their most recent win was by six at Florida State. At home they win big, and on the road they win by narrow margins. Clemson played their last home game against NC State where they lost by just one. They’ve only lost two home conference games by double-digits. I think Miami wins, but I don’t think they win by more than 10. Confidence Meter: 5

8:05- Illinois State Redbirds: The Wichita State Shockers are definitely the bigger name and first-glance pick in this matchup, but they’re actually one and a half point underdogs as they travel to Illinois State to take on the Redbirds.  Illinois State has won their last four in a row and seven of their last eight. Eight days ago they went on the road and upset then-#16 Creighton and followed that with a 20-point beatdown of Bradley who had beaten them just a couple weeks earlier. At home, the Redbirds have won their last four and will get the chance to avenge another earlier-in-the-season loss when the Shockers beat them by 12 in Wichita. The Shockers have struggled recently on the road losing to UNI and SIU in their last two road games. Confidence Meter: 6

9:35- 150 or more: This pick is subject to change based on the first-half game flow, but the All-Star game has gone over in four of the last five years and last year the two teams combined for 291 points total. Defense in this game is way less than optional, it’s downright frowned upon. Confidence Meter: 2
