ESPN Streak for the Cash, March 13 Picks and Analysis

In one of today’s Streak for the Cash picks, the Syracuse Orange and Rakeem Christmas will try and deny the Seton Hall Pirates in the Big East Tournament. The Syracuse Orange defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 76-65 earlier this season in the game pictured, but do they make a good pick if you’re looking for green on your Wednesday? Championship week rolls on in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash with college hoops games this afternoon and tonight from the Big East Tournament, the Patriot League Finals, probably some late-arriving Pac-12 picks, and maybe even more late additions. In the event that more games are added I’ll tweet my picks out @FantasyCPR and try and get a full post up if possible. There’s also picks on the board from the Women’s Algarve Cup Finals, the NBA, the NHL, and the UEFA Champions League games. Here’s my take on the picks for today:

3/13 Streak Picks

9:00- Panthrakikos win: It’s a Greek Cup game so the teams’ motivation may not be there and Panthrakikos doesn’t even need a win to move on. Veria is pretty bad on the road, although they did beat Panthrakikos in league play. I’m not confident either way, but Panthrakikos won leg one on the road and should be able to win at home too. Confidence Meter: 2 1/2 (out of 10)

Feb 6, 2013; Providence, RI, USA; Providence Friars guard Vincent Council (32) shoots the ball against Cincinnati Bearcats guard JaQuon Parker (44) during the first half at Dunkin

12:03- Providence Friars: Providence is 3 1/2 point underdogs as they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats. Cincinnati has faded after a great start and lost four of their last six games. They barely beat USF in overtime at home in their last game. Cincinnati’s offense is very three-point reliant, but their defense is among the best in the country. The Friars have trended the other won winning seven of their last nine and only losing at Syracuse and at UConn in overtime. Part of that run included a win over Cincinnati even though at that point the Bearcats were ranked #17 at the time. Providence is playing better as of late and I think they’ll pull the mild upset here. Bryce Cotton is the Big East’s leading scorer averaging almost 20 a game, and with Senior point guard Vincent Council playing at home I think  Cotton and Council lead the Friars to victory. Confidence Meter: 4

1:00- Germany win/draw: The US Women’s National team is in Portugal for the finals of the Algarve Cup against Germany. The Germans are just behind the US at #2 in the world and won this cup last year. The USA team had been cruising through this tournament but were held to a 1-1 tie in their last match by Sweden. They’ll also be without Hope Solo in goal after surgery to repair torn cartilage in her left wrist. Although I’ll be cheering for the US women to win, the smart pick is Germany getting the draw. Confidence Meter: 5

2:25- Syracuse Winning Margin: The Orange take on Seton Hall in their first game of the Big East tournament and in this prop their winning margin is matched against the Pirates’ made free throws. In their regular season meeting this year, Syracuse won by 11 at Seton Hall despite not playing well and struggling to put away the Pirates until late. Seton Hall did win last night, but it was an ugly, ugly game where they made just six free throws and scored just 46 points even though the game went into overtime. The Pirates average 11 free throws a game, but the Orange are hurting after getting beaten in four of their last five and will look to take it out on the Hall at Madison Square Garden where the Orange fans always show well. Confidence Meter: 7

3:45- Bayern Munich wins by 2+ goals: Bayern is insanely good at home and beat Arsenal 3-1 in London in the first leg. They don’t give up hardly any goals and as Arsenal presses forward they’ll probably be able to counterattack and score at least two. This one seems like it could be a blowout and more of a Bayern celebration. My only hesitancy is that Bayern doesn’t need to win at all to move on never mind win by two so they may not start their top lineup or be as motivated to score as usual. Confidence Meter: 3

7:03- Villanova winning Margin: Villanova has been one of the most mercurial teams all year with some great upsets at home but also some ugly losses when you least expect it. They beat St. John’s in their earlier meeting 98-86 but they needed overtime to close out the Johnnies. St. Johns plays many of their games at MSG so it’s almost like a home game for them as they face the Wildcats in this rematch. Villanova is 4 1/2 point favorites and may need a solid win to solidify their spot in the field of 68 so I think Jay Wright’s team will get the job done and beat the Red Storm by enough to cover this prop. I’d really like to take St. John’s but the fact that they average under four three-pointers a game doesn’t give me enough confidence to do it. Confidence Meter: 4

7:33- Bucknell wins by double digits: Bucknell is favored by 10 1/2 as they take on the Lafayette Leopards in the Patriot League final. Lafayette has played well winning seven in a row including upsetting the Bison of Bucknell in their only loss in their last 12 games. In the first meeting between the teams Bucknell thumped them by 15 in the Sojka Pavilion in Lweisburg which is where this game will take place as well. Lafayette isn’t a pushover, but I do think Bucknell is the better team and at home I think they’ll win to get their ticket to the dance. Confidence Meter: 5

Mar 12, 2013; Orlando, FL, USA; Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard (12) dunks the ball against the Orlando Magic during the third quarter at Amway Center. Los Angeles defeated Orlando 106-97. Mandatory Credit: Douglas Jones-USA TODAY Sports

7:35- LA Lakers: With Dwight Howard getting his revenge win last night in Orlando, the Lakers can now refocus on their playoff chase as they head to Atlanta to take on the fast-fading Hawks. Atlanta has last three in a row and six of their last seven including a one-point loss to the Lakers in LA. the Lakers return the visit tonight having won nine of their last 11 and their last four in a row. Both teams played last night, so I don’t expect the back-to-back to have too much effect on the game. What I see being the difference is current form, and the Lakers are playing much better right now. Confidence Meter: 6

8:11- 28 points or more: This prop is for Durant and Westbrook’s combined point total in the first half as the Thunder host the Jazz.  Durant averages 28.4 per game and Westbrook 23.3 meaning this prop is probably just about where their total will end up. The Jazz struggle on the road and the Thunder will be ready to run it up after getting beat in San Antonio on Monday. Utah gave up over 100 points in three of their last four road games to the Knicks, Cavs, and Bucks so I think the Thunder will be able to score and that KD and Westbrook will cover this prop just barely before half. Confidence Meter: 3

9:35- Calgary Flames: The Detroit Red Wings head to Calgary for their second meeting with the Flames this season. Calgary won 4-1 in Detroit back on February 5, but have lost their last three in a row while being outscored 13-3. All of those were road games for the Flames who are a respectable 6-5-2 at home while the Wings have struggled to a 3-5-1 road record. Detroit  has lost their last two games dropping both halves of a home-and-home against the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets. Calgary is dead last in the Western Conference but are much better at home at the Saddledome where I think they’ll get the win tonight. Confidence Meter: 4

Mar 7, 2013; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Nuggets small forward Kenneth Faried (35) reacts after a play in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets won 102-97. Mandatory Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

10:45- Nuggets win by Double Digits: Denver is awesome at home with a 28-3 record coming into tonight’s game in which they’re favored by nine in the Pepsi Center. They will be especially motivated to beat their former teammate Carmelo Anthony who struggled in his last game which was his first back after a knee injury. The Knicks lost by 29 in that game at the ORACLE against the Warriors. Both Anthony and J.R. Smith will be playing their former team, but at home I don’t think they’ll be any match for the Nuggets. Denver has won their last nine in a row and six of those have been by double-digits. They’ve also won their last 13 at home and seven of those have been by ten or more. Confidence Meter: 5
