ESPN Streak for the Cash, March 23 Picks and Analysis

Can the Connecticut Huskies and center Stefanie Dolson (31) really cover a 50-point spread as they take on Idaho in their NCAA Tournament opener?  Find my pick for that game and the rest of today’s Streak for the Cash picks in this post. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

It’s unusual when a Saturday on Streak for the Cash seems slow, but that’s exactly what today feels like after yesterday’s Frantic Friday stunt with picks, picks, and more picks all day long. I was unable to stay by my phone or computer for the whole day, but it seemed like it was a pretty insane day of Streak for the Cash drama. Hopefully, your entry starts today in the green at the end of it all, but if not there’s definitely some solid picks today to turn it around.

Most of the focus of the sports world will be on the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament once again, but there are also picks from the PGA Tour, the NHL, the Women’s Tournament, the NBA, MLS play, and even NCAA Wrestling Championships. Find something your focused on and enjoy a great day of green. I’m posting my full write-ups for my NCAA picks in another post which I’ll link to when it’s finalized, but these are my Streak picks for today:

3/23 Streak Picks

8:42- Graeme McDowell or Tie: In this prop, Lee Westwood tees it up against Graeme McDowell in their first nine holes of the day. Both players made the cut by a stroke and sit at +2 for the tournament. McDowell has played the first nine holes at +1 Thursday and then +2 yesterday thanks to a double-bogey on the sixth hole. Westwood had an ever worse time on the third yesterday where he picked up a triple-bogey but managed to shoot just +1 on the front nine after shooting even par day 1. In other words, Westwood would have won this prop by one stroke both the first two days of the tournament. That being said, I still would take the tie since their current form and overall game seems to be in about the same place. For just nine-hole props, it’s always best to take the tie if there isn’t a major and clear advantage to the non-tie option. Confidence Meter: 4

12:03- Alabama: The Crimson tide are four-point favorties as they host Stanford in the NIT 2nd round. Bama was a solid 14-3 at home while Stanford struggled when traveling going just 5-6 on the road. The Crimson Tide won three of their last four and cruised past Northeastern to open their NIT run. This will be their first matchsup against a Pac-12 team this season. Stanford escaped Stephen F. Austin by just a point at home in their first round matchup and I think they’ll struggle going across the country to play in a hostile environment. They lost by eight to Mizzou on a neutral floor in their only game against an SEC opponent. Bama at home is a solid favorite to start your college basketball day off in the green in the NIT. Confidence Meter: 6

12:18- VCU Rams: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 4

1:30- UConn by 50+: For the first time in Streak for the Cash history, a team is giving 50 in a prop. The crazy thing is, UConn is actually favored by even more (51 1/2) and makes a solid pick. The Idaho Vandals are on the other side of this as they play their first ranked team of the season after battling through the WAC tournament.  UConn has won eight times this season by 50 or more and the game is in Storrs, Connecticut so they should be able to again dominate their competition. Still, as much as I hate giving points, 50 is a ton and I’d stay away if possible. Confidence Meter: 3

1:50- Justin Rose: Rose shot a 65 on Thursday and followed that with a 70 yesterday to stay tied for the lead with Bill Haas who followed his 69 with a sizzling 66 to get to -9. Rose has more of a history on this course and actually matched Hass’ birdies yesterday although he did have two bogies in his last five holes and Haas was able to add an eagle. Giving the tie makes this less appealing, but Rose is still my pick. Confidence Meter: 4

2:45- Michigan State Winning Margin: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 6

3:45- Columbus Crew win or Draw: The Crew come in 1-1-1 in their first three matches earning a draw at home against San Jose last week. DC is also 1-1-1 but has a slightly worse goal differential and is also coming off their draw last week on the road against the New York Red Bulls. With no common opponents and the season so young, it’s hard to get a read on exactly where these two teams fall in the MLS pecking order, but I think Columbus can get at least a draw as they travel to the nation’s Capital. Confidence Meter: 4

5:18- Colorado State win or Single-Digit Loss: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 3

6:10- Arizona wins by Double Digits: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 3

7:00- Charlotte Bobcats: The Bobcats host the Detroit Pistons who are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak. Charlotte has actually won their last two against Toronto and Washington with both wins coming in Charlotte ad the Time Warner Cable Arena where this matchup also takes place. The Pistons could get both Brandon Knight and Andre Drummond back from injury which would definitely make a difference, but I’ll take the Bobcats who for once are actually coming in hotter than their opponent. Confidence Meter: 4

7:10- Saint Louis Billikens: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 6

7:45- Butler Bulldogs: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 4

8:00- Indiana Pacers: The Pacers have beat the Bulls in all three meetings this season as they head to the United Center to face them for the final time in the regular season. The Pacers have cruised in their last three games while the Bulls have lost six of their last eight and just lost at home to Portland who is horrible on the road. I think the Pacers complete the season series sweep on their way to a Central Division title. Confidence Meter: 5

8:40- Wichita State 3-Pointers Made or Tie: Full write-up coming soon. Relevant stats: Zags favored by 6 1/2 while the Shockers make 6.5 three’s per game. Confidence Meter: 5

9:40- Syracuse wins by Double Digits: Full write-up coming soon. Confidence Meter: 6

Mar 19, 2013; Vancouver, British Columbia, CAN; St. Louis Blues center Patrik Berglund (21) is congratulated by left wing David Perron (57) and forward Andy McDonald (10) after scoring against Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider (35) during the third period at Rogers Arena. 10:00- St. Louis Blues: The Blues take on the Oilers in the late game at the Rexall Place in Edmonton. The Oilers are 5-4-4 at home while the Blues come in with a 8-6-1 road record. St. Louis is 10-1-1 in their last 12 against Edmonton and have won each of the last four including one earlier this season. Confidence Meter: 4
