Streak For The Cash, March 28 Picks And Analysis

In one of today’s Streak for the Cash picks on ESPN, the Indiana Hoosiers and guard Yogi Ferrell (11) will face the Syracuse Orange as the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 begins play tonight. With four days left in the month, it’s no time to stay on the sidelines in Streak for the Cash. Fortunately, there’s a solid board featuring a good variety of matchups throughout the day and into the Sweet 16 tonight. The PGA Shell Houston Open gets us started with Euroleague basketball, Spring Training baseball, and tennis from Miami taking us up to the four NCAA Tournament games tonight. There’s also some NHL and NBA options tonight if you’d prefer to forget your busted bracket and pick something else.

Here’s the picks I’m watching today:

3/28 Streak Picks

Apr 1, 2012; Humble, TX, USA; Hunter Mahan celebrates with the championship trophy after his victory during the final round of the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club-The Tournament Course. Mandatory Credit: Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports

8:50- Hunter Mahan or Tie: Mahan’s matched up with Phil Mickelson in this nine-hole prop. Both are on my fantasy golf team for the week (full post here) and both have a great history at this event. Only because he’s getting the tie, I’ll go with Mahan. Confidence Meter: 4

12:40- 149 Points or Fewer: The line is 149.5 as Real Madrid takes on CSKA Moscow in the Euroleague. Nine of the 12 Top 16 games Real Madrid has played have been under and six of the 12 played by CSKA Moscow have been under. The last time these teams met the score was over but only because overtime was needed. Confidence Meter: 3

1:05- 7 Games or Fewer: After surviving Sara Errani upset bid yesterday, Maria Sharapova takes on Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic needed three sets to oust Roberta Vinci in her last match, but has only beat Sharapova twice in eight tries. They haven’t played in the last two years, but only in one of their five hard court matches has the number been over. Sharapova is rolling and her last two tournaments, 10 matches, only twice has she lost eight games. Confidence Meter: 4 1/2

1:50- Keegan Bradley or Tie: In another matchup of two players on my fantasy golf team, Bradley gets the tie as he faces Rory McIlroy. McIlroy hasn’t been in great form lately, but did have a good final round at the Cadillac the last time out. Bradley finished well just last week and has a better history at this event. Getting the tie, he’s a solid pick to get the green in this one. Confidence Meter: 5

3:10- 21 Games or More: Murray has won his last five head-to-head matchups with Marin Cilic. At the US Open, Cilic took the first set last year before losing three in a row. They met last year at Wimbledon two with Murray winning in straight sets. In each of their last three meetings, Cilic has forced a tie-breaker or taken a set which should be enough to take this prop. Confidence Meter: 4

Mar 24, 2013; Austin, TX, USA; Miami Hurricanes celebrate the win over Illinois Fighting Illini in the third round of the 2013 NCAA tournament at Frank Erwin Center. Miami won 63-59. Mandatory Credit: Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

7:15- Miami winning Margin: The Miami Hurricanes take on the Marquette Golden Eagles in the first NCAA Tournament game of the day. Miami is favored by 5 1/2 while Marquette averages just 4.2 three-pointers made per game. Miami barely got past Illinois, but their guards will ultimately be too much for Marquette. This could be close, but since Marquette hits so few three-pointers, ultimately I think Miami covers. Confidence Meter: 6

7:47- Ohio State Buckeyes: The Buckeyes are 3 1/2 point favorites as they take on Arizona in their sweet 16 matchup. OSU is playing extremely well having rolled through the Big 10 tournament and their first game before almost letting their last one get away before Aaron Craft came up huge. While Arizona is playing well to, I think Ohio State is getting the contributions is scoring from across their lineup and should be able to overcome an athletic Wildcat team. Ohio State has won 10 in row, but could be playing in a hostile environment since the game’s in LA which should draw plenty of fans from ‘Zona. This will be an exciting, entertaining, and close game, but I’m ultimately going to take the Buckeyes to pull it out. Confidence Meter: 4

8:00- LA Kings: The Blues have struggled a bit losing three of their last four including a loss at home in their last game to Edmonton. At the same time, the Kings are coming in starting to gain momentum including an impressive 5-4 win on the road at Chicago on Monday. LA has won seven in a row over the Blues including a 4-1 win at St. Louis earlier this season. Since the game is in St. Louis, it’s no lock as the Blues look to turn things around, but I think LA is gathering steam at the right time and should be able to power past the Blues as the teams continue to jockey for playoff positioning. Confidence Meter: 6

Mar 6, 2013; New Orleans, LA, USA; Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (24) is defended by New Orleans Hornets center Robin Lopez (15) during the fourth quarter at the New Orleans Arena. Los Angeles defeated New Orleans 108-102. Mandatory Credit: Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Sports

8:30- LA Lakers: The Lakers are playing on back-to-back nights after holding on for a three-point win in Minnesota last night. They’ve struggled on the road going just 14-23 away from the Staples center, but the Bucks have been struggling themselves having lost four in a row and seven of their last nine. Brandon Jennings was benched for the 4th quarter last night in Philadelphia and had some pretty harsh words for Coach Jim Boylan. The Bucks look on the brink of collapse and the Lakers badly need the win. Dwight Howard has also had quite a bit of success against them, so I think LA gets the win even though it’s a back-t0-back on the road. Confidence Meter: 5

9:30- Edmonton Oilers: Their last time out, the Oilers knocked off the Blues in St. Louis and now get to return home to host Columbus in a matchup of two teams trying to crack into the postseason for the first time in years. The Oilers have been solid at home (5-5-4) although they haven’t played many games at Rexall Place. Columbus has played more home games and are 10-4-5 but have struggled to just 3-9-2 on the road which they’ll be tonight. Edmonton has won the last four times Columbus has come to town, and with the Blue Jackets still continuing to struggle scoring, I think they’ll be able to get a close win overcoming the Jackets hot goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Confidence Meter: 4 1/2

9:45- Indiana Winning Margin: The Hoosiers have an interesting prop here as its not the number of three’s that Syracuse makes but the number of PLAYERS that make a three against Indiana’s winning margin. Both teams have looked strong in their first two matchups, but the Hoosiers come in as 5 1/2 point favorites. As a fan of the Orange, I hope we can pull off the upset. The reason I don’t think that’s the smart pick here is that only three or four players usually make three-pointers, and if the Orange hit a scoring drought Indiana could pull away. The Orange haven’t played well from behind this season, so unless you think they pull the upset, I’d take the Hoosiers winning margin. Confidence Meter: 6

10:17- Wichita State Winning Margin or tie: The Shockers lived up to their name knocking off the first #1 seed to be bounced in the tournament as they took down Gonzaga in the last round. They come into tonights action as 4-point favorites over the La Salle Explorers. La Salle played three games in five days last week to get this far, but their four guard lineup may not work against Wichita State. The Shockers were impressive on both sides of the ball while La Salle was clutch, winning their last two games by a total of four points, but won’t be able to keep up with the revitalized Shockers behind returning guard Ron Baker. Confidence Meter: 5

Mar 27, 2013; San Jose, CA, USA; San Jose Sharks goalie Antti Niemi (31) blocks a shot in the third period against the Anheim Ducks at HP Pavilion. San Jose won 4-0. Mandatory Credit: Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

10:30- San Jose Sharks: The Sharks and Wings are both playing well as they meet tonight in San Jose at the HP Pavilion. The Wings have won five of their last six behind a potent powerful play and have won their last five games on the road. As good as the Wings have been on the road, the Sharks are also excellent at home compiling a 9-1-4 record on the year including a 4-0 beatdown of Anaheim last night. San Jose has gotten the better of the recent head-to-head series winning six of their last eight matchups with Detroit even though the Wings got a W earlier this season. Detroit’s goaltender Jimmy Howard has been especially Shark-bit having lost his lave five starts against San Jose with a 4.06 GAA. Confidence Meter: 4
