The PGA Tour heads to Cajun Country as they take on TPC Louisiana in the 2013 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Last year, Jason Dufner and Ernie Els finished at -19 and Dufner got the win in the playoff. Obviously with winning scores like that, you need players who can get low and pile up up birdies in a hurry.
As we saw last week at Harbour Town, the wind can change things in a hurry and it could be a factor again this week. Graeme McDowell defeated Webb Simpson in last week’s playoff in the win at Hilton Head Island. We didn’t need a playoff in our Fantasy CPR group. MT Cup dominated putting up 213 thanks to having Webb Simpson and Luke Donald who finished in the top three. Nobody in our group had McDowell, but overall the scores were decent in the 180′s and 190′s. MT Cup took the lead for our Spring Segment while Eagle’s Next is still atop the overall standings.
My entry struggled a bit last week as it seemed the points were on my bench all week long. I actually had McDowell at one point but then changed and went with Sneds instead. Hopefully these picks for this week fare better for me:
Jason Dufner: Before Dufner won at TPC Louisiana last year, he’d had a string of top ten finishes-t3 in 2011, t7 in 2010, and t9 in 2009. He’s been solid but not spectacular so far this season on tour with no top ten’s but making the cut in six of his eight starts. If there’s a course for Dufner to excel on, this is the one.
Bubba Watson: Watson also has a nice history in Louisiana winning this even in 2011 and finishing t18 last year. He has four top 15′s this season and had a string of three top 20′s snapped at Augusta where he struggled in the final round and finished t50.
Other Options: Charles Howell III, Brendon de Jonge, Richard H. Lee
Justin Rose: Rose is on an incredible run of 14 straight top 25′s in a row on the PGA and European tour. He finished in the top ten last year at Zurich and can get low enough to get the win this year.
Fredrik Jacobson: Jacobson has piled up seven top 25′s in his last seven starts including a t25 at Augusta National. He hasn’t played this event in the last four years, but has consistently been around the leaderboard making him a good pick for this week.
Keegan Bradley: Bradley has five top 10′s in his 10 starts on tour this year and had four in a row before a third-round 82 dropped him into a t54 finish. In the final round, Bradley did bounce back with a 69, and I think this will be a strong week for the New England native.
Cameron Tringale: Tringale is a little bit of a sleeper, but is a streaky player who has a solid history in New Orleans. He missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open his last start but had three finishes in the top 27 before that at Tampa, Bay Hill, and the Shell Houston Open. In two previous trips to the TPC Louisiana, he’s finished t7 and t18. Tringale can pile up birdies in a hurry if his putter is on, and he could put up another nice finish this week.
Other Options: Nick Watney, Jimmy Walker, Charley Hoffman, Aaron Baddeley
Rickie Fowler: Fowler finished in the top 10 last year at the Zurich and has had a solid season so far. He’s made all but one cut and has a trio of top 10′s as well. He looked good at the Masters piling up birdies but also making a few critical mistakes. If he can avoid trouble, he could easily win this week.
Thorbjorn Olesen: Olesen made some noise at the Masters finishing 68-68 after opening with a 78. He had to withdraw from the Shell Houston Open but aside from that has three top 20′s in four appearances in the states this season. The “thunder bear” should be ready for another solid finish this week in New Orleans.
Other Options: Billy Horschel, Ryan Palmer, Jeff Overton
