Streak for the Cash Picks, May 4 Analysis and Previews

Check out my picks for all today’s Streak for the Cash action including game seven between the Chicago Bulls and point guard Nate Robinson (2) and the Brooklyn Nets. Mandatory Credit: Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

The First Saturday in May shapes up to be a full one in ESPN’s Streak for the Cash. Things get started early with EPL soccer and then there’s a fascinating Bundesliga matchup that also serves as a Champions League Final preview. This afternoon also includes props and picks from the NHL Playoffs, PGA Tour, and a ton of Major League Baseball options. There’s a couple of props from Churchill Downs later this afternoon including the Kentucky Derby. Tonight there’s more NHL and MLB action as well as a game seven from the NBA Playoffs in Brooklyn and the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship. There’s plenty of picks, but these are the ones I’ll be watching today:

5/4 Streak Picks

10:00- Southampton win, draw, or lose by 1: Southampton are on the road at Tottenham as the Spurs continue their chase of a top-four finish. They expect to get Gareth Bale back in the lineup which should be enough to get Tottenham a result they desperately need. However, Southampton is too good and has played too well to give them the goal in this one. They lost their last match 3-0 but before that were 3-2-0 over a five-game stretch that included wins over Liverpool and Chelsea. They also beat Man City earlier this season and lost just 2-1 at Old Trafford against Man U. Tottenham has won just one of their last 13 by multiple goals. Confidence Meter: (out of 10)

12:30- Borussia Dortmund win or draw: Dortmund hosts Bayern Munich in this Bundesliga matchup before they meet in the Champions League final later this month. Dortmund is 10-2-3  at home this season and earned a draw at Bayern Munich earlier this season. With the final later this month, both sides could choose to play conservatively making another draw a very likely possibility. Dortmund is at home, so I’ll take the draw with them although I do think Bayern Munich is the better team and will probably get the Champions League win on May 25. Confidence Meter: 3

12:35- Washington Capitals: After a horrendous start, the Caps battled their way into the playoffs and took game one at home at the Verizon Center over the Rangers. Washington went 11-1-1 during the month of April and are playing extremely well as they look to go up 2-0. They scored all three of their game one goals in the second period to come from behind and get a 3-1 win. When their offense is on, they’re impossible to stop, and they’ll definitely have a say in who comes out of the Eastern Conference. Confidence Meter: 5

12:36- Either Team Leads: Statistically, it’s more likely that one side will be ahead, but it’s actually pretty close. New York actually led 1-0 at the end of the first in game one. Confidence Meter: 3

1:05- Cincinnati Reds: The Reds send Tony Cingrani to the mound making his fourth Major League start. He’s been excellent in his first three and come in with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 ERA. He’ll be up against the Cubs and starter Jeff Samardzija who has lost his last four starts after winning on opening day. Samardzija is 1-4 with a 3.35 ERA as he takes on the Reds against whome who he has had success (2.89 ERA) but no run support (0-2 record). Cingrani could very well continue that trend as the Reds look to win their second game in this series. The Reds have taken three of four from Chicago this season and have won 18 of their last 23 head-to-head matchups. I think their success continues this afternoon. Confidence Meter: 6

1:05- Minnesota Twins: The Twins try to snap the Tribe’s five-game winning streak as they send Kevin Correia to the mound to take on Scott Kazmir. Correia has been excellent so far this season and is coming off eight scoreless innings in his last start which was against Texas. The Indians will hope Scott Kazmir can build on his last start which wasn’t enough to get a win but was his best of the season. In his two starts this year, he’s 0-1 with a 8.64 ERA. The Twins scored enough yesterday to force Cleveland into extra innings, and today I think their bats will do enough to get Correia the win. Confidence Meter: 4

1:40- 69 or fewer: This is a prop for Phil Mickelson’s round 3 score. Phil has been playing great golf at Quail Hollow so far this week and has a two-stroke lead after a 68-67 start to the tournament. In his two rounds he has 11 birdies and just two bogeys. He’s already has one run-away on Tour this season and I think he’ll try and pull away today in round 3 for his second. Confidence Meter: 5

4:05- LA Angels: The Angels send Tommy Hanson to the mound who has been pitching better lately (details here) as they look to get their second win in a row in this four-game set with Baltimore. LA will look to make Freddy Garcia’s return to the Majors as unpleasant as possible as he comes from Triple-A to make the start. In his career, Hanson is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA against Baltimore. Confidence Meter: 6

4:05- St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals and Brewers are trending opposite ways right now making St. Louis the best late-afternoon pick. The Cards have won four in a row while Milwaukee has lost their last three. Today, St. Louis turns to Adam Wainwright who has been good this year (4-2, 20.3 ERA) and good in the past against the Brewers (9-6, 2.00 ERA). He’s also thrown two of his four career shutouts against Milwaukee. The Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo has had no such luck against the Cards, though. He’s 3-1 with a 4.25 ERA on the year but is 0-7 with a 9.56 ERA in his last eight starts against St. Louis. For his career he’s 1-11 with a 6.86 ERA. St. Louis will look to get the better of him again this afternoon and take the first two of this three-game set. Confidence Meter: 7

4:15- New York Red Bulls win or draw: The Red Bulls are 4-2-4 but are coming off a pair of nice wins having won three of their last four and four of their last six. This afternoon, they head to Columbus to take on the Crew who are 3-3-2 but have won just one of the last four matches. The win was in their match which was against DC United also in Columbus. This is a tough call, but since the Red Bulls get the draw that’s the way I’m going. Confidence Meter: 3

4:49- Wise Dan: Disclaimer: I don’t know all that much about horse racing. This Woodford Reserve Turf Classic prop features Wise Dan against the field. Dan is the favorite and reigning horse of the year. He comes in as a 6-5 favorite and has been impressive so far this season. This seems like one of the props where the huge percentage goes down and the one beats the field. Confidence Meter: 2

6:24- Any Other Horse: By all accounts the Kentucky Derby is wide-open. The two horses in this prop, Orb and Verrazano are slightly favored but the rest of the pack is strong and I think the field gets this prop. Confidence Meter: 3

7:30- Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks and Wings meet in game three of their NHL Playoff series in Joe Louis Arena tonight. The Wings took game two but blew a three-goal lead and seemed to lose momentum even though they won in overtime. They also lost Danny DeKeyser who broke his thumb. During the regular season, the Ducks won their one meeting in Joe Louis with the Wings and I think they’ll go back up in the series with a win tonight. Confidence Meter: 5

8:10- Brooklyn Nets: The Nets have won two in a row to force tonight’s game seven which is the only one on the NBA slate for today. Brooklyn has home court advantage and have seemed to have more energy in recent games as the Bulls continue to play under-manned without Derrick Rose. They also may be without Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich who missed game six. Nate Robinson has led this scrappy, hard-nosed Bulls team admirably, but Deron Williams at home will put the Nets on his back and carry them into the second round. Confidence Meter: 7

9:03- BYU Cougars: UC-Irvine takes on favored and top-ranked BYU in the Championship game. The Cougars are -167 favorites and beat UCI in Irvine earlier this year. It took five sets, so expect a close and entertaining game. Ultimately, though, BYU has been the best team in Men’s Volleyball this year and is the better pick to get the win. Confidence Meter: 4

10:00- LA Kings: The Blues took the first two games of this series in St. Louis each by a score of 2-1. The Kings and Blues are both defensively minded, but LA has been much better this season at home (19-4-1) than on the road (8-12-4). I think the defending hcahmps get this win to avoid a 3-0 defecit. Confidence Meter: 6
