It’s another big Wednesday with a jam-packed slate of games in Major League Baseball. Every team in action and games all day long means plenty of opportunities for fantasy baseball owners looking for starting rotation help. Each day we highlight some of the top options available in over half of ESPN leagues. Here’s my picks for Wednesday, May 22:
Jorge De La Rosa-Colorado Rockies: (15.6% owned in ESPN leagues) De La Rosa got roughed up a bit allowing five runs in five innings his last time out against the Giants but had 13 shutout innings in May before that. He’s allowed two earned runs of less in five of his last six starts and comes into Wednesday’s appearance with a 5-3record and a 3.58 ERA. He’ll face the Diamondbacks in the afternoon at Coors Field where he’ll be opposed by Trevor Cahill. There’s definitely risk here, but De La Rosa has been a nice streaming option so far this season and should be again in this outing.
Nick Tepesch-Texas Rangers: (2.1%) Tepesch has been inconsistent in his eight starts this season, but appears to be in a good spot at home as the Rangers take on Oakland and Jarrod Parker who comes in 2-5 with a 6.04 ERA. Tepesch has allowed just three runs in his last two starts while striking out nine in 11 innings and allowing just 10 hits. On the year, he’s 3-4 with a 3.98 ERA and 31 K’s in 43 innings. He’s no sure thing, but does represent a solid opportunity to get a win if he can put up another quality start.
Kevin Slowey-Miami Marlins: (14.2%) Slowey has crashed back to earth after an exceptional run. He has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts after allowing just nine in his first seven starts. He and the Marlins host Cliff Lee and the Phillies Wednesday night. Wins are hard to come by with the rest of the Marlins roster, but Slowey is worth a look if you think he can bounce back.
Tyler Lyons-St. Louis Cardinals: (0.0%) The Cardinals are forced to go to their minor league depth for the second time recently as they call up Trevor Lyons. Lyons has shot up through the Cardinals system, and gets a chance Wednesday in a very favorable matchup. He’ll start against the Padres in Petco as they send rookie Burch Smith to the mound who has struggled in his first two starts giving up 11 runs in 6 1/3 innings for a 15.63 ERA and a WHIP over two. Lyons gets a solid lineup behind him and pitcher-friendly Petco making him a good long-shot selection for Wednesday. (Long shot selections are owned in less than 1.0% of leagues and don’t count against my stat table at the bottom.)
Here’s how my picks have done the last week:
