There are some bit showdown matchups this week in college football including a huge clash of the unbeaten teams in Florida tonight in Tallahassee. There’s also some nice in-state rivalries in Michigan and North Carolina as well as some conference matchups that should provide plenty of late drama. As usual, ESPN has selected the best 10 matchups, and below you can find my picks and level of confidence in each.
Last week was a much better one for college football prognosticators as average scores in ESPN’s College Pick’em bounced back to 43 after a season-low 25 in week 8. In our FantasyCPR group, all the entries that picked finished over 40 with LoserOwesMeGuinnes turning in the high card of the week with 49 points missing just Iowa and Minnesota a week after totaling 15 points on two correct picks. That’s a bounce back week!
Here’s my picks for week 10 with a quick explanation of each pick. Check out Mike Marteny’s picks for all the games this week by clicking here. Just a reminder his picks are against the spread while my picks listed here are straight up. Make sure to get your picks turned in before kickoff.
1 point- NC State Wolfpack over North Carolina Tar Heels: This is a tough game to pick since both teams have struggled. NC State is 0-4 in the ACC and North Carolina is 2just 2-5 overall including an ugly loss to East Carolina. I’d keep your money safe from betting either of these teams, but for the sake of Pick’Em I’m going with the Wolfpack at home.
2 points-Texas Tech Red Raiders over Oklahoma Sstate Cowboys: This Big 12 matchup isn’t in in-state rivalry, but these two gun-slinging teams will definitely bring the offense as they meet in Lubbock in a top-20 matchup. OSU has actually moved to a one-point favorite in what’s expected to be an extremely close showdown. It’s a tough pick either way, but I’ll take the Red Raiders at home.
3 points- Michigan State Spartans over Michigan Wolverines: Michigan has been disappointing especially on the road. Since this is a home game for the Spartans and it could be bad weather, I’ll take them to grind out a win in East Lansing as they look to stay unbeaten in conference play.
4 points- Georgia Bulldogs over Florida Gators: Both teams are banged up as they meet in Jacksonville. Since Georgia is expected to get Todd Gurley back and this game isn’t in the swamp, I’ll take the Bulldogs in this classic SEC showdown.
5 points- Virginia Tech Hokies over Boston College Eagles: BC hung with Clemson and Florida State, but lost both games and are just 1-3 in ACC play. Virginia Tech hasn’t faced either of those powerhouses and come in 3-1 in conference after losing last week to Duke. Virginia Tech’s defense is solid, but BC still needs a statement win. It seems like this has become a “hot upset” pick this week which usually means the underdog won’t be able to pull it off.
6 points- Nebraska Cornhuskers over Northwestern Wildcats: Remember when the Wildcats started the season 4-0? They’ve dropped all four games on their conference schedule and know have to head to Lincoln to face the ‘Huskers. At home, Nebraska has looked pretty good outside of a bad loss to UCLA. They did drop a tough game to Minnesota last week and have a road trip to the Big House next week, but I don’t think they’ll fall in this trap game.
7 points- Wisconsin Badgers over Iowa Hawkeyes: Iowa won in overtime last week but didn’t look good in the process. Wisconsin rested after trouncing Illinois and Northwestern and barely losing a tough one to Ohio State. I do think Iowa will keep it close at home, but I don’t think they’ll knock off the Badgers. Wisconsin’s defense and running game both get the edge over Iowa’s in this matchup of similarly built teams.
8 points- Boise State Broncos over Colorado State Rams: CSU has won their last two and Boise State lost last week to BYU giving them an uncharacteristic three losses on the season. All three losses came on the road so traveling to Fort Collins to face the Rams may not be as easy as it looks. That being said, Boise has a better record and has played a tougher schedule, so I think they’ll get the road win.
9 points- Auburn Tigers over Arkansas Razorbacks: The Tigers offense has been in credible and the Razorbacks defense hasn’t been able to stop many teams. The recent history in this matchup is very hog-heavy, but I think the Tigers will turn that around Saturday even though they do have to travel to Fayetteville.
10 points- Florida State Seminoles over Miami Hurricanes: The Hurricanes and Seminoles both come in undefeated, and Miami is a good team. However, they’re nowhere near the elite level that Florida State has shown the last few weeks. Plus, they’re the home team in what probably won’t be as close a game as the rankings indicate.
