Each morning, I’ll scour the previous night’s NBA games like a crazy person with a metal detector at the beach, looking for that precious fantasy gold that is most likely on your waiver wire.
As a brief explanation, I’ll give two guys who can help out, one of whom who should be around in most standard leagues and is owned in less than 75 percent of ESPN leagues and a second, deeper cut, who is available in less than 20 percent of ESPN leagues. Without further ado, here’s January 12th’s “All Wired Up”!
Terrence Jones, PF, Houston Rockets (49.2 percent owned)
19 points (7/14 FG, 5/5 FT), 0 threes, 17 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers
I was very surprised to see that Jones is still available in so many leagues, but if this game doesn’t convince people to swoop in on him, I don’t know what will. He is locked into the starting power forward role and after a shake stretch a few weeks back, he has re-solidified as a vital part of the Rockets team.
He’s the 85th-ranked player for the entire season and is averaging a double-double in the past two weeks, with over a block a game. Do yourself a favor and get Jones on your squad.
Deep League Diamond
D.J. Augustin, PG, Chicago Bulls (10.2 percent owned):
20 points (6/13 FG, 7/7 FT), 1 three, 2 rebounds, 12 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers
Kirk Hinrich is still the starter in Chi-Town, but it’s former lottery pick D.J. Augustin who is providing the best value for fantasy purposes.
He is getting just a whisker under 30 minutes a game during the last month and is averaging 6.1 assists over that time frame.
Given assists are one of the most top heavy stat categories, to be able to get six a game off the wire is a blessing from above. Derrick Rose isn’t walking back through that door any time soon, so I don’t see the minutes changing much. In fact, Hinrich’s annual long term injury must be due soon, giving Augustin even more value.
