The dog days of the NBA season turn up some odd performances and the Denver Nuggets’ Timofey Mozgov may have just had the oddest of the lot.
In today’s edition of “All Wired Up”, I’ll delve into the fantasy strengths of Mozgov for the few games that remain in the NBA season.
» Timofey Mozgov, C, Denver Nuggets (11.6 percent owned on ESPN.com)
23 points (10-15 FG, 3-4 FT), 0 three-pointers, 29 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks vs Warriors.
It’s been brewing for a while.
Timofey Mozgov has been steadily accumulating good performance after good performance, but it all came to a nadir in the surprise win over the Warriors. Mozgov grabbed an insane 29 rebounds, by far a career high and also the most boards pulled down by anybody this season in the NBA.
It’s actually the second time this season Mozgov has grabbed at least 20 boards, doing it again at the start of December.
He’s basically unchallenged at center for the Nuggets with J.J. Hickson and JaVale McGee out for the season with injuries, so he’s been threatening to put up big numbers for a while. And he has been really good, but unnoticed by the majority of fantasy fans.
In the past two weeks, Mozgov has averaged 16.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks, shooting 56.8 percent from the field and a respectable 76.7 percent from the line. Those numbers rank Mozgov as the 25th player on Basketball Monster.com over the last two weeks.
The Nuggets have three games remaining this season, with their next game coming Saturday, followed by a back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday. That give Mozgov ample opportunity to put up some decent numbers and if you’re still alive in your fantasy league, he could definitely swing the rebound and block categories your way. Also, with his cheap price, Mozgov provides fantastic daily fantasy value.
