New York Yankees starter Michael Pineda was suspended for 10 games Thursday by Major League Baseball for using pine-tar while pitching Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.
Pineda has the right to appeal the suspension, but given the fact that he was caught on television not once but twice pitching with pine tar, that seems highly unlikely.
The good news for his fantasy owners is that Pineda will likely only miss one start as the Yankees have an off day within the next 10 days.
Pineda was off to a solid start to the season, going 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four starts, striking out 15 while only walking three in over 19 innings of work.
As for the Yankees, their rotation could be in trouble in the immediate future with Ivan Nova likely headed for season-ending surgery, and with Pineda likely facing a suspension.
However this may not be the worst thing for Pineda going forward.
He is coming off shoulder surgery and the Yankees have planned to be careful with his innings, so this might not be the worst thing for him as he attempts to last the whole season.
The Yankees haven’t made it official who will get the ball in Pineda’s place.
