Gregory Polanco has arguably been the hottest prospect in AAA this year. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should know about his immense potential. And if you’re like me, you’ve already added him and are playing the frustrating waiting game.
Through 38 games, Polanco is slashing a gaudy .373/.440/.613 in AAA with 5 HR and 8 SB. The Pirates sit in 4th place in a very competitive division, and the right field platoon of Jose Tabata and Travis Snider isn’t setting the world afire.
So when can we expect Polanco to get the call?
A week ago the Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly offered Polanco a 7-year deal of about $25 million guaranteed, and he turned it down. Had he accepted, he would no doubt be in right field for the Pirates today.
Clearly the organization wants the guy up, but at the right price. And since Polanco declined, the team will likely wait until the Super Two cutoff has passed, which will be in June. Polanco has nothing left to prove, but the Bucs are being patient.
If you can afford to wait about a month, the time to stash Gregory Polanco is now before the serious rumblings of a call-up begin. Assuming a mid-June promotion, my predictions for ROS are .280 BA, 10 HR, 15 SB.
