In leagues that don’t have a cap on waiver wire acquisitions, I’m an advocate for streaming and picking my spots for pitching. There’s plenty of value on the wire in 12-team leagues throughout the season, which is one reason I wait until the last couple rounds of drafts to grab a fifth starter. Chances are I’ll swap him out anyway.
In deeper leagues, these guys are likely owned, but consider these streamers for standard leagues with Week 8 on the horizon.
Drew Pomeranz (33% owned Yahoo!)
Next start: May 20th @ Tampa Bay
Notes: After floundering in Colorado to begin his career, the A’s have taken a flier on Pomeranz and he’s delivered 0 ER and a 13/2 K/BB ratio in two starts. He’ll head to Tampa next week where the Rays are not particularly great against lefties (.249).
Tanner Roark (30% owned)
Next start: May 21st vs Cincinnati
Notes: Roark was supposed to come out of the rotation once Doug Fister returned, but he’s stuck around. Aside from a bad outing in Philly a couple weeks ago, he hasn’t been scored upon since April 16th. Next week the Reds come to town, where Roark has a 0.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.
Phil Hughes (19% owned)
Next start: May 20th @ San Diego
Notes: Hughes had an ERA of 5.14 for the month of April, but has turned it around. In his last four starts, he’s given up an average of one earned run per, and has not issued a walk. He’ll head to spacious Petco Park in San Diego for his next start.
Chris Young (14% owned)
Next start: May 22nd vs Houston
Notes: I’m not a big Young fan since he’s prone to walks, but I like him at home. In three starts at Safeco he’s got a 1.71 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. If nobody in the rotation gets skipped next week, Young is slated to face the lowly Astros at home.
