Prior to draft day, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez was a hot name to be had late in drafts.
As things turned out though Martinez didn’t win a spot in the Cardinals rotation and his value plummeted, especially after some early struggles out of the St. Louis bullpen.
But that has all changed as Martinez is a guy you should look to grab immediately.
Martinez is available in about 95 percent of ESPN leagues and has only a 4.33 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 36 punch outs in 43.2 innings pitched. But with both Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia on the DL, Martinez has increased value as a starter.
He made his second start of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies and picked up the win, going five innings and giving up three runs on three hits with only one walk while striking out five.
Martinez should be added in all formats, as he should have a rotation spot for the immediate future.
His already solid performance should only improve as he gets stretched out after spending most of the season in the bullpen.
He has a rocket for an arm and can help any fantasy team thin on pitching at the moment.
Once he gets stretched out I would expect the ERA to drop and the strike outs to start piling up.
Do yourself a favor and grab him now.
