San Francisco 49ers vs San Diego Chargers
- Colin Kaepernick has looked as average as a starting NFL quarterback can look all preseason. This trend has continued into week 3, where he went 6 of 12 for 59 yards. Kaepernick was hit and hit often as he posted another negative performance in this preseason game. With Alex Boone still holding out for a bigger contract, Kaepernick’s fantasy potential drops due to the current struggles of the offensive line. This should be a message to the 49ers front office that they need Boone on the field to protect their investment in Kaepernick.
- Aside from Kaepernick, most of the starters were limited and did not do much of anything. Carlos Hyde was a bright spot, and is a real handcuff option for Frank Gore. Hyde ran for 38 yards on six carries. Had Hyde gone to a different team needing a running back, he would have been the rookie to own this season.
- Antonio Gates showed last night that he can still bring it. Gates caught three balls for 28 yards and a touchdown. Gates can be a viable option if you want to wait on a tight end. He will likely be touchdown dependent, but he won’t be the worst option out there after the top tier is gone at tight end.
