College football is back! I will be glued to as many games as possible so I can tell you what you missed while watching your favorite team!
Here is the rundown from the first games of the week.
Now, on to Saturday!
Is this really the example we want to show the Irish about American Football? Central Florida and Penn State was a comedy of errors for most of the game. There were numerous false start penalties. Penn State did everything they could to give this game to UCF. On the bright side, Christian Hackenberg set a school record with 454 passing yards, but he did throw two interceptions to only one touchdown.
If Virginia could ever get their offense up to speed with their defense, they would be a dangerous team. The Cavs defense effectively held UCLA to only one touchdown. The Bruin defense scored touchdowns on all three Virginia turnovers in the second quarter. The Cavs defense held tough, but their offense just couldn’t get enough going.
When is the MAC or the Big 12(10) going to wise up and invite North Dakota State up to Division 1? They have a great game day atmosphere in Fargo, and fans that follow them around the Midwest. That, and the Bison can play football. They have defeated a FBS school in each of the last five seasons with their 20 point win over Iowa State today in Ames. The Bison dominated the second half of the game. I can name four Big 10(14) teams and two Big 12(10) teams that are worse than NDSU right now. They need to make the jump.
Okay Michigan, we get it. This is not 2007 anymore. They punished Appalachian State in a form of payback for the Mountaineers shocker in the Big House seven years ago.
Are some people seriously picking Iowa to win the Big 10(14) West? Their punishment should be to watch Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa on repeat until the end of the season. This does not look like a team on the cusp of a division title.
J.T. Barrett took a bit to get comfortable, but he led Ohio State down the field a couple of times in the fourth quarter to put away Navy. The thing that stood out to me most about this game was how impressive Navy’s option looked, and how impressive Ohio State’s defensive line played. The Buckeyes are not as explosive as they would have been with Braxton Miller, but they are not dead in the water without him either. This was the first game since 2011 that Ohio State did not score a touchdown in the first half though!
Note to the ACC: you still have to pay attention when a Sun Belt team comes to town. Monroe knocked off Wake, and Georgia Southern nearly pulled the upset against North Carolina State. The Wolfpack needed a 14-3 fourth quarter run to pull this one out!
Raheem Mostert and Jarvion Franklin put on shows for the “fans” in West Lafayette. The school offered free admission to all students, and the stadium was still at least 1/4 empty….
Come back later today for the rundowns from the rest of Saturday’s games!
