As the baseball season wraps up its second month, its time for fantasy owners to make some moves to get their teams set for the summer months. There are a number of opportunities to improve your lineup as players return from injuries and expand into new roles with their team. Here’s our weekly lineup of position player upgrades available in over half of ESPN leagues:

Sleeper Starting Lineup

C- A.J. Pierzynski-Texas Rangers: (34.2% owned) Pierzynski returns after a quick 15-day DL trip. He jumped right back into the lineup and has only gone 1-6 in his first two games back. However, he’s one of the top 10 offensive catchers most years and won the 2012 Silver Slugger for C. The fact that he’s so available shows how deep the C market is, but it also represents quite the opportunity for owners who need an upgrade. As the summer heats up in Texas, Pierzynski should be able to get rolling with the long ball and be a solid option at a typically offensively-challenged position

May 1, 2013; Phoenix, AZ, USA; San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt (9) celebrates with center fielder Andres Torres (56) after hitting a 3 run home run in the eighth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

1B- Brandon Belt-San Francisco Giants: (23.1%) Belt pinch hit yesterday going 0-1 after going 0-4 on Tuesday. On Monday, he had a huge game going 4-5 with four runs scored a home run and an RBI. His average is still .252 with six homers on the year and 22 RBI. He’s not an elite option, but he’s definitely an option especially in daily leagues against righties. Belt has had a good May hitting .276 this month with four homers and 11 RBI.

2B- Darwin Barney-Chicago Cubs: (1.6%) 2B is an incredibly thin position, but Barney is bouncing back from a horrible April to at least make himself a deep league option. In May he’s hit .224, but in the last seven days he’s been even hotter hitting .353 while going 6-17. He’s raised his average over .050 already and has a couple home runs and a couple RBI. He still is far from an elite option but is at least putting up numbers worth the Cubs keeping him in the lineup. How long he can stay hot is unknown, but for now he can be used as a short-term fill-in.

3B- Eric Chavez-Arizona Diamondbacks: (39.9%) Chavez is tearing things up for the Snakes and hitting in the middle of the Arizona lineup. He’s gone 22-50 in May for a scorching .440 average with 10 RBI, six doubles, a triple, and a home run. Again, he won’t be able to keep this pace up for the rest of the season, but there’s nothing wrong with riding him as long as he does.

May 22, 2013; Denver, CO, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (1) hits a single during the fifth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Mandatory Credit: Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

SS- Didi Gregorius-Arizona Diamondbacks: (40.8%) We’ll take the whole left side of the infield from the desert this week. Gregorius is batting .348 on the season. He’s in a prime batting spot between leadoff hitter Gerardo Parra and Paul Goldschmidt who has been raking from the third spot. Gregorius has yet to steal a base and only has three home runs but can score runs and get on base enough to make him a solid SS pickup.

OF- Matt Joyce-Tampa Bay Rays: (15.8%) Joyce is still not an everyday fixture for the Rays, but he’s starting to bring his average up and still providing the power numbers owners can utilize. His season average is .252, but he’s hitting .288 in May and .333 in the lsat seven days. In his last four games, he has a pair of home runs and six RBI along with three walks, a pair of doubles, and four runs scored. He is dealing with a bit of a hamstring issue but is expected to be fine tomorrow when Tampa returns from its off-day today.

OF-Domonic Brown-Philadelphia Phillies: (36.7%) Another outfielder trending the right way offensively is Domonic Brown. Brown has gone 10-38 in his last nine games with a pair of home runs and seven RBI during that span. He’s even added a pair of steals in two attempts. Brown now has eight homers on the season with 24 RBI and is starting to grow into an increased role of production.

May 19, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus (middle) and Leonys Martin (right wait at home plate to welcome left fielder David Murphy (7) after Murphy hit a three run home run against the Detroit Tigers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sport

OF-Leonys Martin-Texas Rangers: (7.2%) Martin has stepped in as the new Rangers center-fielder and is worth an add right now for run-scoring, steals, and even average. He’s hit consecutively in seven striaght games with two doubles and a triple along with five runs scored and five stolen bases. As long as he’s in the lineup, he’s a great bargain in daily leagues and a decent add if you need steals and runs in season-long formats.

As the season rolls toward the quarter-pole, it’s time to make some roster decisions on your fantasy baseball team. If you’ve been carrying some dead weight and are in need of an upgrade, it may be time to make your move. If you’re looking for pitching help, check our daily pitching pickups. If your needs are more on the offensive side of your roster, we try to give a full lineup every week (archive). Here’s some options that are heating ups the calendar creeps towards summer.

Sleeper Starting Lineup

C- A.J. Ellis-LA Dodgers: (2.6%) Ellis is a solid offensive option behind the plate although his numbers don’t jump off the page in any one specific category. He’s more of an overall contributor with his .286 average, two home runs, and 10 RBI in 32 games played this year. He has heated up in May going 14-40 which is good for a .350 average. Ellis won’t hurt you in any categories and his average is a nice plus from your catching roster spot.

1B- Mitch Moreland-Texas Rangers: (49.7%) Moreland is an option we’ve discussed often before on FantasyCPR and he’s continuing to see playing time and find success. He’s just under our 50% threshold of no longer being considered a “sleeper,” so if you need a 1B you had better act quickly. Moreland was held hitless yesterday in Oakland snapping a seven-game hitting streak. His .290 batting average and 18 RBI are definitely worth considering, but his main contribution is power numbers. He has six home runs in his last 10 games and will play the summer in the sweltering Texas heat where home runs fly out of Arlington. Moreland is the everyday 1B for Texas now and is a great pickup if you can still add him.

May 13, 2013; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura (9) steals second base on a head first slide as Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker (18) gets out of the way during the fifth inning at PNC Park. The Milwaukee Brewers won 5-1. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

2B- Neil Walker-Pittsburgh Pirates: (45.5%) Walker is back from the DL and looks ready to contribute right away. Most owners drafted him highly, but many parted ways when he was sidelined with a hand injury. He has been hitting well in his first three games back going 3-11 and making good contact numerous times. In all three games back Walker has hit fifth which should give him plenty of RBI opportunities in a productive Pittsburgh lineup.

3B- Trevor Plouffe-Minnesota Twins: (22.7%) 3B is a pretty shallow position right now in fantasy baseball meaning Plouffe has more value due to his position. He has had a nice May going 13-47 with a pair of home runs. He’s hitting .241 on the year with four homers and 15 RBI. There were rumors of him losing playing time but his recently hot hitting has secured his spot in the everyday lineup.

Mar. 12, 2013; Phoenix AZ, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks base runner Didi Gregorius (1) is tagged out at home plate by Philadelphia Phillies catcher Erik Kratz (31) in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Jennifer Hilderbrand-USA TODAY Sports Images

SS- Didi Gregorius-Arizona Diamondbacks: (33.4%) At the beginning of the season, I over and over again wrote about a young NL shortstop who was breaking out and becoming universally owned. Jean Segura of the Brewers has continued to hit well all year, and hopefully you were quick enough to make the pickup. If you missed at Segura, meet your second-chance. Gregorius has been great for the Snakes hitting .348 on the year with 10 of his 24 hits going for extra bases, three home runs, and 11 runs scored. Gregorius’s totals are a big low due to his time on the DL, but he’s firmly in the two-spot in the D-backs lineup and should keep scoring runs and making web gems for as long as he can stay healthy. He may not end up the same breakout as Segura, but he’s definitely worth owning in most formats.

OF- Jon Jay-St. Louis Cardinals: (34.0%) Jay runs hot-and-cold at times, but recently the hot has been on full blast. He’s had a great May going 18-45 (.400) with a pair of home runs, eight runs scored, and two of his four home runs. He lost his leadoff spot when he slumped earlier this season, but makes a nice pickup as he heats up and may be back atop the order soon.

OF- Chris Carter-Houston Astros: (23.6%) Carter is pretty one-dimensional in his fantasy contribution, but he’s good at what he brings-the long ball. He has nine home runs on the season and three in his last nine games. His RBI are decent-22, but his average can hurt if you’re not balanced at other positions. He’s hitting .217 after an 0-3 day yesterday. He did score a run giving him 22 runs scored to match his RBI total. He has a little positional flexibility with 1B and DH also available, and Carter is a fine add if you’re looking to power up one of your outfield positions.

May 15, 2013; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Chicago White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo (24) is congratulated by catcher Hector Gimenez (38) after hitting a home run during the fourth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

OF- Dayan Viciedo-Chicago White Sox: (24.0%) Another option that brings power to the table is Dayan Viciedo. He’s homered in each of his last two games and is 8-18 since coming off the DL. Viciedo has four total home runs and is hitting .288. His homers and hits tend to come in clusters and it looks like he’s picking it up now in May which was his best statistical month last season as well.

OF- Corey Hart-Milwaukee Brewers: (27.9%) Hart is a strategic option at this point and expects to return at the end of the month. If you can afford the roster space, you can get four months of Hart’s power and steal production on the waiver wire. His ownership is crawling upwards already, though, so act fast if Hart’s available. You can slide him onto the bench or to an IR spot until he comes back ready to play everyday off the 60-day DL.
